California University of Pennsylvania company history timeline

1852

Founded in 1852, it is a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.

California University of Pennsylvania traces its roots back to 1852, when the community of California spent tax money and donations to create an academy for kindergarten through college-level courses.

1864

In 1864, it purchased 10 acres (4.0 ha) and moved to what is now the center of its present location, and a year later the school received a charter to be a normal school.

1914

The school was acquired by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1914 and converted to a two-year school for training elementary teachers.

1928

The school achieved collegiate status in 1928 and became California State Teachers College.

1959

The programs offered were expanded over time and broadened beyond teacher training, and by 1959 the school's name was condensed to California State College.

1962

The graduate program began in 1962.

1983

In 1983, the college became part of the commonwealth's State System of Higher Education and changed its name to PennWest California.

1996

In the same year, PennWest California's College of Science and Technology became fully operational; it was renamed the Eberly College of Science and Technology in 1996.

2002

2007

Steele Auditorium underwent a major renovation and expansion project, reopening in the Fall of 2007.

The Vulcans football team ended the 2007 season ranked #4 in the NCAA Division II, won the PSAC Championship, and captured their first NCAA Regional title, Defeating Shepherd University by a score of 58-38.

2007: A new academic building, Duda Hall, was dedicated to replace an older building with the same name. (A remnant of the old Duda Hall stands across from Manderino Library, where it supports the Ascent of Humanity sculpture.)

2008

The men's soccer team won the first PSAC Championship in program history in 2008.

2009

The women's soccer team has advanced to its first ever NCAA tournament in 2009, going on to win the Atlantic Regional title.

The 2009 season saw the California Vulcans start with an 0-2 record.

2009: Herron Hall reopened after a major renovation and expansion to accommodate a multi-level fitness and recreation center.

2011

2011: The PennWest California Convocation Center opened as the home of Vulcan volleyball and basketball, and as a regional venue for corporate, entertainment and scholastic events.

2015

Women's basketball won a second title by defeating California Baptist 86-69 in 2015, helped by a 21-0 first half run.

2015: The Natali Student Center was rededicated after a top-to-bottom renovation based on input from PennWest California students.

2021

In July 2021, the university was officially merged with fellow Western Pennsylvania institutions Clarion University of Pennsylvania and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

On October 14, 2021, the state officially adopted the new name of the combined universities: Pennsylvania Western University.
