Under the oversight of a Supervisor or Foreman, a Water System Maintenance Worker (WSMW) assists in performing essential maintenance and repair of water facility infrastructure. This includes repairs and maintenance to water mains, service lines, streets/sidewalks and fire hydrants; repair and replacement of meter boxes; and assists in the general cleanup of facilities including painting, repairing, and maintaining of Company owned or operated facilities.
This is a structured, multi-month apprenticeship that includes on-the-job training, paid classroom learning, and Water Distribution Operator II and Water Distribution Treatment II certifications preparation. The Water Distribution Operator II certification is required to complete the program.
Apprentices will be promoted to a Water Systems Operations Maintenance Worker upon obtaining the Water Distribution Operator II certification. The positions can be located in San Mateo, Atherton, or Los Altos, CA.
Essential Functions:
Under direction, excavate and expose service/main leaks; isolate damage and assist in repairing or replacing assets; notify customers.
Assist in repairs and maintenance activities of meters, meter boxes, service lines, mains, wells, pump stations, and fences.
Assist flushing and performing maintenance on all necessary functions of mains; operate various hand and power tools in the completion of these activities.
Assist in setting, replacing, and/or removing 1 ½" to 2" size meters.
Under direction conduct all water discharges with Company's National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) policy including, but not limited to, implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs), monitoring and recording all required data, and completing necessary paperwork related to all discharge events.
Prepare and operate service truck(s) daily, the loading of needed materials and equipment, remove and dispose of debris, and clean equipment and truck as needed.
Participate in all scheduled classroom training and certification preparation programs.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Change, repair, and clean meter boxes/lids, valve covers.
Clean, paint, repair, and maintain Company owned or operated facilities.
May perform other functions as outlined in the CBA section 8 W2 (Water Distribution Operator Certification).
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be able to effectively communicate with their supervisor, co-workers and the public.
Have the ability to perform basic mathematic functions to calculate figures; and have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Must possess a High School diploma or equivalent.
California Class C Driver's license.
Must have a working knowledge of basic features of word processing programs (e.g., Microsoft Word) and electronic mail processing programs (e.g., Microsoft Outlook).
Employee must be able to work with supervision and respond appropriately to direction, feedback, evaluation, coaching, counseling, and/or discipline.
Must obtain California State Water Distribution Operator II certification prior to completing the program.

The Interim Special Project Coordinator will report directly to the Supervisor of Water Quality and will work closely with the Districts, Communication team, and the Division of Drinking Water. The coordinator will liaise with external consultants involved in this project.
The federal requirement is to test for lead in schools and daycares over a 5-year period with the completion date of 2032, but we are proposing to do the work in 3 years. The interim role is essential for ensuring California schools and childcare facilities meet new lead safety standards. This position can be located in Los Altos, Salinas, or Commerce, CA.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Knowledge of applicable drinking water laws and regulations to relating to lead testing in schools and the Lead and Copper Rule requirements.
Lead the overall coordination of the lead testing program across all identified schools and childcare facilities in California, New Mexico, and Hawaii.
Develop a comprehensive project plan outlining key milestones, timelines, and resources required for the successful execution of the LCRI initiative.
Work with the district to develop sampling plans and ensuring plans meet LCRI guidelines.
Work with CWS internal lab and contract labs to order sample kits in accordance with sampling plan developed for facilities.
Notify schools and childcare facilities of any exceedances, all sample results and public health materials per LCRI.
Ensure that all activities comply with California, New Mexico, and Hawaii's water quality regulations and the specific requirements of the LCRI program related to lead testing in schools and day care facilities.
Serve as the primary point of contact between districts, schools, childcare facilities, and regulatory agencies.
Work with Corporate Communication department to conduct outreach and provide educational materials to facilities on best practices for lead testing and remediation.
Oversee the collection of water samples from facilities and ensure that proper procedures are followed according to the LCRI guidelines.
Manage data analysis and ensure timely and accurate reporting of testing to the California State Water Resources Control Board, New Mexico Environmental Department, Hawaii's Department of Health, and other relevant bodies.
Tracking progress of testing and remediation efforts and providing regular updates to leadership.
Conduct regular reviews of program operations to ensure compliance with LCRI mandates.
Performs other similar duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree with major coursework in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
California Division of Drinking Water Distribution Operator Grade 2 Certification preferred.
California Division of Drinking Water Treatment Operator Grade 2 Certification preferred.
Valid California Driver License.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with internal customers and various departments, outside vendors, and consultants.
Knowledge of applicable drinking water laws and regulations to include SDWA, and Title 22.
Knowledge of internal Policy and Procedures related to drinking water, safety, and operations support.
Ability to prepare, manage, and analyze data.
Strong knowledge of and experience in project management.
Good interpersonal skills.
Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills.

Commerce, CA & Salinas, CA - $74,600 - $138,400 (DOE)
Los Altos, CA - $82,900 - $153,800 (DOE)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

This position requires that you have a background and direct experience in repairing and installing equipment at commercial swimming pools, aquatic facilities, or fountains and water features. Qualifications
Five or more years of experience. Must have strong understanding of pumps, motors, filters, control panels, valves, fittings, nozzles, timers, UV, Ozone, lights, PVC pipe, etc. A big plus is any direct experience fixing and installing control panels, running and bending conduit/wire, submersible lighting, breakers, solenoids, etc. Must be able to troubleshoot problems in the field and work independently. Please have a valid California drivers license.
