In 1899, a small group of widows in New York, inspired by the work of a group in France called Women of Calvary, began caring for destitute women with terminal diseases.
Calvary Hospital was founded in 1899 and is operated in connection with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York.
The first recorded birth at Calvary North Adelaide Hospital was in 1902, just two years after it was founded.
Calvary Hospital was founded by the Little Company of Mary in 1951.
Unprecedented support from the people of North Queensland for the Building Fund resulted in the construction of the main building of the Hospital which was opened in June 1981 with 130 beds.
In 1997, to ensure the continued growth and development of their health and aged care services, the Sisters established a company limited by guarantee, now known as Little Company of Mary Health Care Ltd.
On the 16th Sept 2001, Calvary Hospital celebrated its 50th Anniversary.
Calvary Hospital was purchased by Ramsay Health Care on 11 November 2002 and changed it's name to Cairns Private Hospital.
