Position: StaffAttorney (Housing Unit)

What The StaffAttorney Does:
Provide direct legal representation and advice to the clients of CAMBA Legal Services.
Litigate cases in housing court, administrative forums, and other state courts on behalf of people facing eviction, and in affirmative cases challenging those who threaten Brooklyn residents' ability to retain affordable housing.
Regularly appear in court, persuasively advocate for clients, conduct interviews, draft motions, prepare for trial, and negotiate settlements.
Minimum Education/Experience Required:
Juris Doctorate

POSITION OVERVIEW
Sanctuary for Families seeks a experienced attorney to provide legal representation and advocacy to survivors of domestic and gender-based violence in family law matters in Staten Island. The areas of focus are primarily family offense, custody/visitation, child/spousal support, and divorce. The Senior StaffAttorney will also provide civil legal screenings and legal consultations, assist pro se clients by drafting family law petitions and other filings, assist with

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides pro se legal assistance and consultations to clients regarding family law matters

Collaborates with FJC family law projects across the five FJC's, and assists with screening and case coverage as needed
Facilitates clients' access to intra-agency and outside resources, and administers provision of direct financial assistance and donations to clients
Provides technical assistance to FJC partner agencies
Develops and conducts community outreach, training and education
Builds relationships/partnerships with law firms, law schools, and other agencies to increase visibility of Sanctuary for Families in the legal and domestic violence communities
Actively engages in advocacy committees and task forces, and collaborates with other agencies to advocate for systemic change
Attends and participates in interagency conferences and legal/ bar association committee meetings to keep abreast of developments in the areas of pro bono, domestic violence, and legal remedies for victims of domestic violence

Requirements
J.D. and Admission to the New York State Bar

Sanctuary for Families, Center for Battered Women's Legal Services, the largest provider in the U.S. of legal services exclusively for victims of domestic violence and related forms of gender-based violence, seeks a dynamic individual with a commitment to working with victims and survivors. Purpose of the Job Human Rights First aims to provide critical legal assistance and representation to immigrant families impacted by anti-asylum and anti-immigrant enforcement policies. The Senior StaffAttorney or Supervising Senior StaffAttorney (depending on experience) will play a key role in coordinating and leading efforts to provide rapid response legal services to asylum-seeking adults with children in New York, particularly in the face of restrictive policy changes, large-scale detention, family separation, and mass deportation efforts. This position involves direct client representation, collaboration with pro bono attorneys, and engagement in research and advocacy efforts to push back against these policies and create narrative change. Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Legal Representation & Casework: Proactively identify cases appropriate for legal representation where the clients are impacted by enforcement actions or asylum-restrictive policies. Work closely with clients to prepare and present their cases in immigration courts and before other relevant agencies. Maintain a case load of full-scope and limited-scope representation matters, and provide pro se assistance where appropriate.
Rapid Response Coordination: Collaborate with the Refugee and Immigrant Rights Advocacy team to identify and respond to emerging legal needs in response to new or evolving immigration policies, particularly anti-asylum measures. Help develop and implement strategies for providing legal services in a rapidly changing environment.
Pro Bono Engagement: Leverage Human Rights First's pro bono network of attorneys, law firms, law school clinics, and legal service providers to assist in the provision of legal services. Develop training materials and provide guidance and supervision to pro bono volunteers in handling asylum and deportation cases. Provide training and mentorship to pro bono volunteer attorneys.
Policy Advocacy Integration: Integrate legal representation with broader advocacy and communications strategies. COVERAGE PERIOD: February 2, 2026 - July 3, 2026 PURPOSE OF THE JOB: The temporary staffattorney will collaborate with the Supervising Senior StaffAttorney to effectively administer Human Rights First's pro bono asylum legal representation work through Project: Afghan Legal Assistance (PALA). The PALA Special Projects team within Human Rights First provides, with partner support, legal representation to Afghan refugee arrivals. We help connect individual asylum seekers with pro bono attorneys, providing limited scope and pro se assistance. The PALA team also provides direct legal assistance to Afghan immigrants. The temporary staffattorney will assist in administering Human Rights First's pro bono legal representation work. They will mentor law firm attorneys providing representation in asylum cases in removal proceedings (detained and non-detained) and affirmative cases. In addition, they will provide direct legal assistance to Afghan clients with asylum (both affirmative and in removal proceedings), adjustment of status, and family reunification cases. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Case Selection, Placement and Management
Conduct legal screenings and intake interviews with potential Afghan immigrant clients;
Assist in identifying cases appropriate to either place with volunteer pro bono attorneys or Human Rights First staff;
Ensure that whether Human Rights First provides in-depth mentoring on cases placed with volunteer pro bono teams or direct legal support, all clients and volunteers with whom we partner receive high-quality legal services and guidance;
Provide pro bono attorneys with prompt and thorough legal and procedural support on our Afghan pro bono cases, including conducting trainings, strategizing on individual cases, reviewing draft submissions, and informing volunteers of significant legal developments in asylum, SIV, or other immigration laws impacting the Afghan population in the U.S.;
Build and maintain strong relationships with law firms and volunteer attorneys and create training and advertising materials for pro bono counsel, as needed;
Identify and conduct outreach to new pro bono partners through various traditional and technological platforms, and promote attorney interest in pro bono representation of Special Projects clients;
Identify, analyze, and respond to legal or procedural changes that affect immigrants, including statutory changes, proposed regulations, and decisions of the Board of Immigration Appeals or federal courts;
Contribute to and lead efforts to develop training materials for volunteer attorneys, including Human Rights First's online Resource Library, and other manuals, memoranda, videos, or other training media as needed; and
Assist in conducting client outreach, supporting in-person and virtual client information sessions, and maintaining other forms of regular communication with Special Projects client population.
Mentorship
Provide legal advice, mentorship, and guidance to Special Projects team staff, and work with the entire Refugee Representation team to ensure inter-office support and team collaboration;

Advocacy
Co-lead efforts within the legal coalition of legal service providers serving Afghan nationals in the U.S. for advocacy and coordination, such as organizing coalition calls and attending various stakeholder meetings;
Strategize and collaborate with other local service providers on how to best meet the needs of the immigrant population and improve access to legal representation;
Assist in furthering local and national advocacy initiatives by meeting with officials at government agencies, and engaging in other advocacy efforts in collaboration with the Refugee Protection team;
Promote Human Rights First's mission by participating in local community events, promotional events, immigration-related conferences or events, and other professional networking events that will increase the organization's profile in the community; and

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND EXPERIENCE:

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The NYCLU seeks an experienced, innovative, and dynamic racial justice legal expert who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced organization. The candidate should have the ability to skillfully implement and/or support the NYCLU's interdepartmental approach to racial justice and broad docket of civil rights and civil liberties issues. This position will play a key role in executing the NYCLU's Racial Justice Center's strategic priorities.
The staffattorney will have a particular focus on the intersectionality of racial justice with NYCLU priority areas, such as environmental racism, Indigenous rights, and restorative justice. The staffattorney will utilize a range of strategies to advance racial justice in New York State, including legal research, identifying legislative priorities and threats, joining, and seeking new litigation, and civic engagement, including submitting public comments, testifying at hearings, Know Your Rights education, movement lawyering, coalition development, and strategic communications.
This position is situated in NYCLU's Racial Justice Center and directly reports to the Racial Justice Center Director.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Independently review state and local legislation and engage in related legislative advocacy and lobbying in connection with the Racial Justice Center strategic priorities.
Developing and conducting litigation in federal and state courts and in administrative forums. All NYCLU attorneys are responsible for identifying possible litigation and advocacy, preparing pleadings, motions, and briefs; conducting discovery; presenting oral arguments; and handling all aspects of appeals.
Engaging in pre-litigation analysis including evaluating and following up on intakes; conducting factual investigations and legal analyses; utilizing the Freedom of Information Law; and drafting demand letters.
Develop strong relationships with civil rights advocacy organizations and represent the NYCLU in multi-organization coalitions and working groups.
Work in close collaboration with the NYCLU's legal department on developing RJC litigation strategies to promote and expand racial justice litigation priorities including close collaboration with the legal department in developing claims, preparing pleadings and briefs, conducting discovery and depositions, handle hearings and trials, and argue motions and appeals.
Prepares and delivers testimony at public hearings and drafting public comments.
In collaboration with NYCLU communications staff, provide expert commentary to the media, participate in media briefings, and contribute to op-eds, blog posts, and other publications.
Work closely with staff across the NYCLU-including the Education Policy Center, Legal, Policy, and Field Departments, and our Regional Offices-to ensure that the NYCLU has an integrated approach to furthering the RJC's mission.
QUALIFICATIONS
At least 3-5 years of relevant experience.
Must reside in or plan to relocate to New York
Must be licensed to practice in New York State.
Experience with litigation, drafting and amending legislation and legislative advocacy, community engagement, and leading legal priorities.
Preferred experience working on racial justice issues, such as environmental racism, infrastructure equity, land-use laws, restorative principles such as reparations, education equity, and Indigenous rights.
Significant experience working in policy, legal, or government settings; high familiarity with public and legislative policy, and legal procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Legal Services
Conduct legal consultations, provide referrals or advice and counsel when appropriate;

SALARY & BENEFITS
Salary: This is a full-time, at will, exempt position. Salary for 4+ years of experience is $80,000. Multilingual applicants who use more than one language at work are eligible to receive a $1,500 salary enhancement in addition to their base salary.

About The Role:

Responsibilities:
Support senior attorneys across civil litigation, family law, personal injury, and government affairs matters
Draft pleadings, motions, discovery responses, and client correspondence

Qualifications:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school

The Suffolk County Attorney's Office is seeking to hire attorneys for its Extreme Risk Protection Unit (ERPO) located in Riverhead, NY. About The Extreme Risk Protection Unit (ERPO): The ERPO Unit is a specialized unit representing the Suffolk County Police Department in ERPO hearings in Suffolk County Supreme Court. The Unit focuses on keeping guns away from individuals who are at high risk of using them to harm someone else or themselves. The Unit handles over 1,400 cases a year.
This Assistant County Attorney role requires someone who has integrity and a commitment to public service and justice. The Attorneys will appear in Supreme Court handling Temporary Extreme Risk Protection Order hearings applications along with other related matters.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Handling individual caseloads

Requirements
A Juris Doctorate, with a current license to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
Three (3) years experience in family law and/or public interest*
Familiarity with the court system regarding domestic violence issues
Experience with legal representation to victims of domestic violence
Demonstrated excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills*
Demonstrated ability to represent an advocacy agency or function*
Demonstrated ability to organize time and detail, including keeping of records
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population*
Experience working in an urban setting*
Demonstrated commitment to service of others
Satisfactorily pass State & FBI criminal & Child Abuse clearances pre-hire; and regular renewals (all expenses paid by WAA)
