We cultivate healthy, connected communities by integrating sustainable agriculture, food justice, and ancient Jewish wisdom. We share organic produce with those who need it most and connect people to compelling Jewish ideas and traditions through farming and food. We distribute food through our on-site pay-what-you-can Farm Stand, pop up mobile farm stands, and donations to hunger relief organizations. We offer hands-on education and experiences through School and Group Visits, Farm Camp Farm Tours, Volunteer Opportunities, Jewish Agricultural Festivals, and other community events, inviting our neighbors to connect to the land, Jewish tradition, and each other. Coastal Roots Farm is located in Encinitas, CA on approximately 17 acres of land which we recognize as indigenous to the Kumeyaay and Luiseño peoples. Our Farm consists of vegetable production fields, education farm and gardens, a food forest, chickens, and compost operations. Coastal Roots Farm was incubated by the Leichtag Foundation in 2014 and received 501(c)(3) public charity status in 2015. Position Overview The Camp Counselor position is an entry-level, seasonal position. We are looking for someone who: Enjoys working with youth ages 3 and up and their families, with some experience working with children in an outdoor setting Has some experience working with children in an outdoor setting Is willing and enthusiastic about working within the Jewish community but may be of any (or no) faith or background Is passionate about environmental, outdoor, Jewish and/or agriculture-based education Builds and nurtures relationships with a wide variety of people including colleagues, youth, and families Has effective listening and communication skills Is a leader and team player Is adaptable, creative, service-oriented, empathetic, enthusiastic, and sensitive to cultural differences Works well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment Is dedicated to the camper's experience Is at least 14 years old Can participate in a 5-day, 40-hour Farm Camp staff training. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: Supporting the delivery of the Farm's Jewish and Farm-based Farm Camp program Daily set up and clean up Joining team meetings to plan for activities Caring for campers and providing an unforgettable experience in a loving, non-judgmental environment Compensation $16.50-$17.50 commensurate with experience. Typical Working Conditions The Camp Counselor will work mostly outdoors. There will be exposure to Southern California outside temperatures, chemicals used in the agricultural industry, and loud noises. Essential Physical Tasks The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. As a Camp Counselor, you will be an active participant in all camp activities and will assist your Camp Director with a variety of daily tasks, all with the goal of creating a memorable and meaningful camp experience for your campers. Our Counselors interact with our campers throughout the entire day, helping them make friends, try new things, and generally caring for their well-being. The role of a Counselor is to participate, build relationships and have fun while ensuring the physical and emotional safety of every child. Camp Counselor Qualities Ability to help children grow in character, experiences and insights Ability to guard the health and well-being of campers at all times Capable of sustaining energy for participation in a full day's worth of activities Prior experience working with children Enthusiastic, Responsible, Dependable, Consistent, Level-Headed, Flexible, and Calm in all situations CPR/First Aid Certified OR willing to become certified before the summer begins Camp Counselor Responsibilities Work with group of campers and provide a fun, safe and exciting camp experience Cooperate with fellow Counselors and Camp Director Greet families and campers upon arrival Support Camp Director in establishing rules and emergency procedures with campers Participate in all camp activities Supervise daily swim time in a hands-on manner from within the water (lifeguard certification not required) Help out where needed and lead activities when asked to by the Camp Director Complete other duties, as assigned Benefits of Working with KE Camps Build Critical Skills - You will gain skills sought after by employers. 21st Century Skills such as creativity, problem solving, flexibility, collaboration, organization, planning and communication are just a few of the strengths you'll build throughout the summer.
