Els for Autism Foundation is seeking enthusiastic and responsible individuals to join us as paid counselors for our spring break camp March 16 -20, 2026. Hours are approximately 8A-3P Monday-Friday. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are passionate about working with children on the autism spectrum and are looking to gain valuable experience in a fun and rewarding environment. Staff positions available as noted are paid on an hourly basis as follows: 3 lead counselors ($22.50/hour), 3 assistant counselors ($18/hour) and 3 junior counselors ($15). Key Responsibilities: Assist in implementing daily camp activities, including games, crafts, sports, and educational projects, under the guidance of the camp director and appropriate staff. Engage with campers, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times. Serve as a positive role model for campers, demonstrating enthusiasm, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. Support camp staff in managing group dynamics and behavior management, fostering a positive and inclusive camp environment. Assist with setting up and cleaning up activity areas, as well as maintaining equipment and supplies throughout the camp day. Participate in meetings, training sessions, and other professional development opportunities as required. Enforce camp rules, policies, and safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. Actively contribute to the overall success of the camp program by providing feedback, ideas, and assistance as needed. Qualifications: Previous experience in a camp, recreational or educational setting for children on the autism spectrum is required for paid staff positions. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with campers, parents, fellow staff and volunteers. As a Preschool Camp Counselor, you will play a crucial role in creating a positive and engaging summer camp experience for children ages 4 to 6. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Note: This job description is intended to outline the primary duties and responsibilities of the Marine Science Educator. It is not in order of priority or an exhaustive list. Other duties may be assigned as required. Oversee the logistical aspects of their groups: following the day's schedule, gathering supplies, setting up activities, and carrying all necessary paperwork. Share your knowledge of marine science and passion for the natural environment to captivate and engage campers. Foster an appreciation for marine ecosystems and instill good ocean stewardship practices, setting an example for the camp. Act as a representative of Sanibel Sea School, promoting our programs within the local, regional, and national communities. Essential Duties: Supervise and implement activities for a group of children with special needs in accordance to both age and developmentally appropriate practices as outlined by the licensing agency, State of Florida and the YMCA of South Florida's curriculum. Use measurable tools to track children's progress. Distribute nutritious snacks on a daily basis using universal health/sanitation practices. Document behavior issues and/or incidents daily, as needed. Conduct a health check of each child daily, noting fever, bumps, bruises, burns, or other questionable signs of abuse and document the incident with the Site Supervisor. Maintain high level of professional courtesy with parents, facility personnel, staff and clients at all times. Know and follow proper emergency procedures appropriate to the facility and in conformity with procedures adopted by the YMCA of South Florida and emergency service authorities. Provide regular inspections of areas used by the program to ensure both cleanliness and safety. Check bathrooms for supplies and basic cleanliness before allowing participants to enter. Attend all staff meetings and training opportunities. Report all incidents and accidents within 24 hours to the corporate office. Adhere to the Child Abuse & Neglect Reporting requirements which mandate by law all child care personnel to report suspicions of child abuse, neglect, or abandonment. Ensure that the proper staff to child ratios are maintained at all times and reports discrepancies to the Site Supervisor as needed. Position Requirements: A high school diploma or GED. Minimum Two years' experience, including one year experience of direct contact with children with special needs. Ability to relate to children. Must be at least eighteen years-old at the time of hire. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing. Must have a demonstrated competency in the planning and implementation of recreational and educational activities. Certificates and Licenses: Within one (1) year of employment, you must have completed the following DCF Trainings: The Thirty (30) Hour Training Requirement consisting of (a) Child Growth and Development, (b) Health, Safety and Nutrition, (c) Child Care Facility State and Local Rules and Regulations, (d) Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect, and (e) Behavior Observation and Screening. The Ten (10) Hour Developmentally Appropriate Module (Preferred- School Age Appropriate Practices). Current CPR and First Aid certificates by time of employment. After School positions are year-round part-time positions; typical hours are Monday through Friday 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
