ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Give a 9-week summer commitment (May 29-July 28). Ensure campers' safety at all times. Follow and promote all policies and philosophies in all interactions with staff, volunteers, and the public on and off site. Demonstrate a high quality of work standards and ethics. Under the direction of the Camp Director, implement behavior modifications as described in the Camper's Code of Conduct. Under the direction of the Camp Director, consult with parents regarding camper behavior. Record daily camper attendance and submit accurate records each day. Participate in all camp activities, including those on-campus, off-campus, and undernights/overnights. Assist Camp Specialists in camper instruction and managing camper behavior during specialty periods. Lead Junior Counselors and CITs in safe and effective supervision of campers. Use learned positive reinforcement methods in managing camper behaviors. Relay all parent communication to Camp Director. Follow established cleaning procedures; ensure clean and tidy surroundings before transitioning to a different area on campus. Participate in weekly staff meetings. Wear staff shirt daily- shirts provided for each staff member. Be prepared to assist in any emergency situation involving a camper. Honor confidentiality of the Tampa JCCs and Federation. Stay up-to-date with all procedure and policy changes. Support the mission of the Tampa JCCs and Federation: support and enrich the continuity of Jewish life and values in our community. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Camp Director. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Minimum 1-2 years of experience working with school age children (ages 5-12). Professional experience in licensed childcare setting, strongly preferred. Possess a high school diploma or GED, currently attending post-secondary school, or possess a graduate degree from a college/university. Possess First Aid/CPR certification (can be completed during staff training week). SKILLS REQUIRED: Ability to complete counselor orientation, drug screening, background check, and First Aid/CPR class. Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, effectively with staff, campers, and parents. Ability to make sound decisions that support the mission and are in the best interest of every camper. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Multi-tasking and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and plan accordingly. Adaptability, as planned activities and events may need to change unexpectedly. Creativity and the ability to take initiative to keep campers engaged throughout the day. Reports injuries immediately to Site Supervisor. * Identifies and directly reports instances of unusual, disruptive, unsafe or threating behavior, inappropriate language or conduct, or other disciplinary issues. * Adheres to the Child Abuse & Neglect Reporting requirements, which mandate by law all childcare personnel to report suspicions of child abuse, neglect, or abandonment. The Tampa YMCA requires employees to follow the internal reporting procedures with the assistance of the Program Director and Director of Quality and Risk Management. * Conducts thirty-minute face counts to ensure that the proper staff to child ratios are maintained at all times and reports discrepancies to the Site Supervisor immediately. * Ensures all emergency medication for participants are maintained and accessible at all times during programming. * Additional medication training may be required, including the implementation of administering medicine such as epi-pens, inhalers, shots, injections for diabetes, etc. Education/Experience: * 18 years or older, preferred. * High School Diploma or GED, preferred. * Must have a minimum of one-year experience in school, community, volunteer or work experience in a role requiring interaction with youth. * Must be able to work cooperatively with children, parents and peers; demonstrate character, integrity, adaptability and patience in communicating with others. The tutor interacts and serves as a mentor for students, helping to nurture the self-esteem, confidence and core values of each and every participant, as well as, exhibits behaviors and attitudes that are consistent with the YMCA mission and policies of the Association. Under the direction of the Aquatic Director, Pool Manager, and/or Senior Lifeguard, the Lifeguard is responsible for providing a safe, welcoming, clean, and member/participant focused environment for all members in and around the aquatic facilities. This includes responding to emergencies and administering CPR/AED, First Aid and Oxygen effectively according to certifications. Lifeguards must be alert and identifiable at all times and keep a professional appearance. The lifeguard must work at peak efficiency in all aspects of the aquatic department as assigned and exhibit behaviors and attitudes that are consistent with the YMCA Mission and policies of the Association. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Practice preventative lifeguarding by following and enforcing pool rules and policies promptly, and completes a routine check of pool and deck area regularly throughout their shift * Check, clean, and store required safety equipment and report any concerns to the Aquatic Director or designee immediately * Responsible for securing the pool area at all times, including but not limited to: locking/unlocking doors and gates to control access to the aquatic areas * Maintain cleanliness around aquatic facility and surrounding areas * Monitor chemical balance of pool and records on appropriate forms. Report any concerns to the Aquatic Director or designee immediately * Provide undistracted supervision of the pool while on duty. Demonstrate vigilant scanning, 180 degrees, every 10 seconds checking the bottom, middle and top of their zone including a downward sweep * Follow Association policies and procedures regarding the safety, health and welfare of members, program participants, guests and staff * Understand and perform rescues and emergency procedures, document accidents on the proper forms and communicate to the Aquatic Director or designee as outlined in the EAP in a timely manner in accordance with aquatic, facility, certification policies and requirements * Maintain accurate record of hours worked and be responsible for finding substitutes for absences * Engage in positive public relations with participants, members and guest ensuring a positive experience * Adhere to the Association operating policies and procedures by operating the programs within the guidelines set forth as well as swim test procedures * May be asked to assist a certified swim lesson instructor with class instruction as directed by the Aquatics Director or designee * Attend and actively participate in all trainings, staff meetings/in-services and guard drills as assigned * Perform all other duties as assigned Safety and Risk Management * Adhere to all Federal, State, and local safety regulations, as well as all YMCA policies and procedures related to the safety, health, and welfare of members, participants, guests, and staff. * Ensure that all Tampa YMCA standards, leading practices, and policies are implemented and consistently followed, including those related to emergency procedures, child abuse prevention, and appropriate supervision. * Adhere to policies and procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising participants and boundaries with participants when applicable. * Ensure implementation of and follows all training requirements including risk management and child abuse prevention training in addition to ensuring proper reporting of all incidents/accidents according to risk management procedures. * Maintain a safe and healthy environment at all times, including performing daily safety checks of program areas, equipment, and supplies. * Maintain proper records, including certifications, meetings and trainings. * Maintain an emphasis on safety in all areas of responsibility as they relate to members and staff. Education/Experience Required: * Must be at least 15 years of age * If 15 years old you must work with 18+ year old lifeguard unless there is an Aquatic Director and/or Full-Time Pool Manager on site during entire shift * Proficient in the water as determined by passing a swim test * Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with groups and/or individuals from different backgrounds * Represent the YMCA in a positive manner Certifications/Trainings Required: * Must possess and maintain current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification including Oxygen.
