What You'll Do
As a Lead DEAN Fellowship Counselor, you'll serve as a mentor, facilitator, and leadership coach for high school-aged Fellows participating in DEAN's immersive leadership and professional development program. Responsibilities include:
Guiding Fellows through a three-week rotational experience, supporting them as they shadow instructors, assist with camp operations, and engage in hands-on leadership opportunities.
Facilitating daily leadership workshops and discussions focused on collaboration, communication, entrepreneurship, creative problem-solving, and adaptive leadership.
Coaching Fellows as they take on increasing responsibility working with younger campers and adult staff, offering real-time feedback and reflection.
Supporting Fellows in planning, executing, and presenting an independent capstone project, from concept development through final presentation.
Leading structured reflection sessions that help Fellows connect camp experiences to real-world skills and future goals.
Modeling professionalism, accountability, and positive leadership behaviors in all interactions.
Collaborating closely with camp leadership to ensure program alignment and strong communication.
Supporting community-building through shared meals, team challenges, group reflections, and social connection.
Ensuring a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where Fellows feel empowered to take risks, learn from challenges, and grow as leaders.

Schedule and Requirements
Full on-site availability during the summer: June-August, Monday-Friday
Hours: Monday-Friday 8:30am-3:30pm daily, *8am Mondays

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy's mission is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
Highly qualified seasonal crew staff are recruited each year to support completion of routine trail maintenance, major rehabilitation/repair, and relocation projects. Crew Coordinators are critical to the effective operation of quality crew programs. They serve as hosts to the volunteers and are responsible for all activities necessary to ensure smooth operation of ATC's crew camps, including welcoming and orienting crew volunteers, purchasing crew food and supplies, assisting with crew vehicle maintenance, supporting fieldwork, etc. Applicants must demonstrate responsibility, initiative, and self-motivation. They must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and cooperatively as a member of a team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan menus for crew meals in the field & at base camp, supervise & conduct meal preparation while the crews are at base camp.
Purchase food and supplies for crews efficiently and cost effectively, following ATC purchasing procedures.
Provide basic facility upkeep such as minor repairs, cleaning, submitting work orders, etc.
Support Crew Leaders by assisting with arrangements for routine maintenance or repairs to vehicles and tools and providing other assistance as requested.
Assist with program management duties, including financial record-keeping, monitoring spending trends, and maintaining budget integrity.
Ensure safe, clean, and environmentally sound conditions at the trail crew base camp.
Promote a positive, welcoming atmosphere amongst crew staff, volunteers, and partners.
Greet and orient newly arriving crew members to basecamp facilities, crew life while in base camp, and the history and purpose of the ATC and the volunteer crew program.
Coordinate flight/bus transportation of volunteers between designated pickup/return locations and base camp.
Follow the direction of designated supervisors with respect to duties, logistics, timetables, projects, submit biweekly timesheets, reports, and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Two or more seasons of front/backcountry camping or working outdoors.
At least one season of trail crew leadership or camp coordination.
Ability to manage and be responsible for all support aspects of a trail crew program.
In good mental and physical health.
Commitment to ATC management and resource protection efforts.
Proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to effectively communicate with individuals, groups, and partners.
Ability to live independently and work with little supervision.
Strong hiking and outdoor experience.
Experience in working with volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.
Basic knowledge of Appalachian Trail Conservancy's cooperative management system preferred.

Responsibilities
Create a positive a safe community for staff and campers
Provide overnight supervision to Hat Creek summer campers
Facilitate and participate in all summer camp programming
Be able to work collaboratively and in a timely manner during program delivery
Maintain knowledge of camp schedule, programs, protocols, and procedures
Lead and encourage mealtime efficiency
Learn and facilitate large group camp songs, games, and skits
Clean cabins, inventory program supplies, and participate in debriefs(processing) after each program
Compensation and Benefits:
Starting salary of $250 per week depending on experience
(College Students Only) Educational Scholarship $1500.00-$3,000.00
Meals will be provided while summer programming is taking place at camp and during training

Requirements
A passion for working with children and making a difference
Current CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification before start date
Participate and successfully complete required pre-summer camp training
Willingness to get outside of your comfort zone and try new things, such as being 30 feet off the ground on a challenge course
Ability to take initiative, work collaboratively, and have a positive attitude
Leadership experience or experience working with kids
Ability to work Sunday-Friday for 8 weeks
Ability to pass a background check

Overview: The Learn to Ride / Mountain Biking Camp Lead is responsible for designing and delivering safe, developmentally appropriate cycling instruction for campers ranging from first-time riders (ages 4-6) to intermediate and teen mountain biking participants. This role requires deep knowledge of cycling fundamentals, trail etiquette, bike handling, and youth coaching. The Lead ensures all sessions are fun, progressive, and safety-focused while supervising counselors and managing group flow on both indoor and outdoor riding areas.
Key Responsibilities:
· Teach beginners how to balance, pedal, steer, brake, and ride safely using age-appropriate methods
· Lead progressively challenging riding sessions for older campers, including basic trail skills, climbing/descending, cornering, and bike control
· Design or adapt daily lesson plans based on preset themes and skill goals
· Demonstrate proper helmet use, bike fitting, and equipment safety checks
· Lead small and large groups on beginner-friendly riding loops, skills zones, and controlled trail sections
· Maintain a safe riding environment and enforce all gear, spacing, and speed rules
· Support campers who are nervous, struggling, or learning at different paces
· Train counselors on spotting, rider supervision, and proper instructional cues
· Manage all cycling equipment (balance bikes, youth bikes, helmets, cones, ramps, etc.)
· Facilitate camper confidence-building activities and daily skills challenges
· Communicate clearly with Camp Leads, Office Admin, and families (as needed) about camper progress or concerns
· Create a positive, structured, and encouraging environment for all riders
Qualifications:
· Strong background in cycling instruction, mountain biking, youth coaching, or outdoor recreation
· Experience teaching beginners, including young children ages 4-6
· Knowledge of bike safety, basic maintenance, trail etiquette, and rider progression
· Ability to lead groups confidently in both controlled environments and beginner trail settings
· Patient, energetic, and skilled at breaking skills into clear, simple steps
· Prior youth-program, outdoor education, or camp leadership experience preferred
