    Definition The Community Organizer leads outreach, relationship-building, and community-driven strategies that support the organization's mission to reduce infant mortality in Franklin County. This role is responsible for cultivating trust with residents and ensuring community voice is embedded in program design and implementation. The Community Organizer is responsible for mobilizing and empowering community members to identify their needs as they relate to maternal-infant health and working to collectively resolve them alongside community leaders, grassroots organizations, and partner agencies. Because the role operates within a local government setting, the ideal candidate understands how to balance community organizing principles with public-sector processes, structures, and requirements. Under direction, is responsible for performing professional-level activities to attract, expand, and retain support with community members, partner agencies, and stakeholders, to perform evidence-based interventions, and to maintain relationships in support of the Offices of the Mayor; performs related duties as required. A person who has been selected by an appointing authority in accordance with the Columbus City Charter, Section 148(1) is said to have received an unclassified appointment. Those individuals receiving unclassified appointments serve at the pleasure of their appointing authority and may be terminated from employment at any time. Examples of Work Key Responsibilities Community Engagement & Organizing * Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, neighborhood groups, faith-based organizations, and other local partners. * Facilitate community conversations, listening sessions, focus groups, and outreach events to elevate the experiences and priorities of families most affected by infant mortality. * Strengthen resident leadership by supporting community advisory boards, parent councils, and grassroots champions. * Develop culturally responsive engagement strategies that reflect the community's values, identities, and needs. Community Partnership Management * Collect community feedback, document themes, and communicate insights to internal leadership, staff, and external partners in ways that promote collaborative action. * Track engagement activities and outcomes; use data to identify engagement gaps and opportunities to deepen relationships in underrepresented communities. * Serve as a bridge between government agencies, healthcare systems, and community stakeholders by upholding transparency, accountability, and equitable engagement practices. * Collaborate with program and evaluation teams to ensure community engagement activities inform program improvement and strategic priorities. Communications, Events & Capacity Building * Assist with the coordination of community events, workshops, and trainings that promote maternal-infant health and community empowerment. * Assist with the development of outreach materials, messages, and tools tailored to diverse audiences. * Provide capacity building support to partners to strengthen equitable community engagement practices. Preferred Qualifications * 7+ years of experience in community organizing, community engagement, or grassroots outreach, preferably in Central Ohio. * Experience working in or with local government, or a strong understanding of public-sector constraints and processes. * Ability to build trust with diverse communities, including those most impacted by infant mortality. * Strong facilitation, communication, and relationship-building skills. Preferred Skills * Bachelor's degree in public health, social work, community development, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. * Experience working in Maternal & Child Health, public health promotion, early childhood systems, or infant mortality reduction. * Familiarity with trauma-informed and culturally responsive engagement practices. * Experience working with community advisory boards or resident leadership structures. * Fluency in languages besides English (e.g., Spanish, Somali, Haitian Creole, French, etc.).
