PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The conductor position is a foundational role in the railway and operates within the framework of the union agreement. A conductor works as a member of a train crew that assists in switching rail cars, making or splitting up trains in rail yards, or moving rail cars between rail yards. This position requires you to be vigilant about the safety of yourself and those around you. You must be prepared for unscheduled shift work, being away from home for extended periods of time and working outdoors in all types of weather.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
* Must be able to perform work that can be physically demanding such as walking up to 6 miles a day on uneven ground, climbing up and down and lifting and pulling heavy objects (up to 80 pounds on occasion)
* Willingness to work unscheduled shift work in a 24/7 operating environment
* Working up to 12 hour shifts which include days, evenings, overnight, weekends and holidays
* Ability to report to work within a two hour call window, after scheduled rest
* Excellent focus, attention to detail and ability to multitask

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
* Work in either train or yard service depending on seniority
* Carry out specific instructions detailing a train's route and specific movements
* Coordinate the switching of cars, including coupling and uncoupling cars and lifting out coupling device
* Observe, interpret, and relay signals and other indications affecting movement of train
* Signal crew members for movement of the engine or train using specific signals, or radio to indicate when to start, stop, back-up, set or release air brakes
* Maintain a thorough understanding of and follow General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), general orders and bulletins
* Provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in an emergency situation
* Move on and off moving or stationary equipment
* Fill out forms including train orders and switch lists and prepare clear and legible reports
* Handle emergency situations and operate fire extinguishers as well as be able to apply first aid techniques

TRAINING PROGRAM:
CPKC provides 15 weeks of paid in-class and field training. Providing you with a solid understanding of our safety practices, rules and operations. You will earn $237.67 per day in classroom training and $38.84 per hour in on-the-job training. The average conductor earns approximately $117,000 annually, with the ability to make up to $133,000.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
Become part of our Projects & Public Works team in Kansas City, MO, where you will manage oversight of third-party projects-including passenger and commuter rail, utilities, and public works-that affect CPKC property and operations. In this role, you will serve as a liaison between CPKC and government or regulatory agencies, helping assess, recommend, and promote safety improvements for both public and private railway crossings and grade separations. You will also address concerns and respond to inquiries from governmental authorities, municipalities, private citizens, and other external parties regarding right-of-way, grade crossing, and signal-related issues. This position is ideal for someone with strong negotiation and communication abilities, complemented by a solid engineering background. This position's primary work location may be in either Kansas City, MO or St. Paul, MN.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
* Direct all public infrastructure projects within a Public Works US territory, ensuring alignment with regulatory and company standards
* Supervise flagging activities and manage crossing and signal agreements for projects sponsored by both third parties and public/private entities
* Spearhead negotiations for at-grade crossing closures and establish cost-sharing arrangements for joint projects as per company guidelines
* Monitor industry funding opportunities and initiate annual projects to secure external grants for railway construction and enhancements
* Ensure external contractors comply with CPKC, American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), and corporate safety and insurance policies when working on railway property
* Represent CPKC at public forums, site assessments, and other key stakeholder engagements to advance project goals

Conductors operate track switches, couples and uncouples cars, and performs other duties associated with the movement of trains, cars, and engines in rail yards and on the main railroad. He or she receives, relays, or acts upon oral, written, or radio instructions from the dispatcher, yardmaster, or other personnel indicating the switch movement, placement, or delivery of railroad cars and/or a train.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Receives and takes direction from a certified trainer
· Conduct railcar and train movements; signal crew members for movement of the engine or train using lantern, hand, and/or flag signals or radio to indicate when to start, stop, back up, or set or release air brakes
· Observe, interpret, and relay arm, lantern or radio signals and all other indications affecting movement of a train
· Operate track switches (visually check switch condition and direction) to change the direction of the engine or cars within yard limits or on the main railroad; apply or release hand brakes to switch or perform other duties
· Read and understand the book of rules, timetables, bulletins, train orders, waybills, placards, safety instructions, and other written or printed material
· Prepare required daily reports and switch lists, either manually or with a computer; fill out forms, including train orders
· Inspect the condition of the train and equipment in movement and while stationary
· Couple air and electrical connections between locomotives when making up trains
