By the end of fiscal year 1948, the first full year in operation, the Veterans Canteen Service had activated facilities in 124 hospitals; while some hospitals expanded existing canteens, others were opened for the first time.
In March of 1961 VVS, Inc. (Valley Vending Service) was founded when Wayne Davis, a Cozad, Nebraska truck stop and café owner, and Gale Evans, a local bakery owner, joined forces in the automated food business.
With the establishment of VCS, for the first time, all VA hospitals featured stores and services to benefit Veterans, photo 1963. (Vanguard)
In 1968 VVS spread its wings again, getting into the amusement device business with its first pool table on location.
In 1979, the same year VVS acquired it’s first dining service account, Wayne stepped down as President to make way for his son Dick Davis.
His daughter, Kristen Jack, joined the company in 1991, and is now President of VVS, Inc.
Canteen was acquired by Compass Group in 1994 and has continued to lead through innovation, launching new vending technology, expanding its office coffee and refreshment services, and introducing revolutionary concepts like Avenue C.
