Canton South High School company history timeline

1932

The school was know as Augustana Academy in 1932 and was no longer a division of the college.

In 1932 Congress established the Federal Home Loan Bank System in an effort to reorganize existing savings associations in America.

1933

Many of the 120 names on the bronze plaque marking the graves of patients include military ranks.In December of 1933, the Hiawatha Asylum for Insane Indians sent 69 patients to St Elizabeth's the remaining 15 were sent home.

1935

With the help of the federal governments Works Progress Administration, the first Canton High School (now Canton Intermediate School) was built and opened in 1935.

1936

Cost increases and slowing attendance prompted the last Central United States tournament in 1936.

In order to take advantage of these changes the savings and loan reorganized as First Federal Savings and Loan of Canton in 1936.

1945

The first parent/teacher organization appeared in Canton in 1945.

1946

In 1946, in what Cantonites refer to as the "second Manhattan Purchase," the city purchased for $1.00 the 337 acres and buildings of the old institution, the only stipulation being that it be used for the welfare of the community.

1953

By 1953 the state dropped its control and the first local superintendent of schools was hired.

1959

66, aware of a nationwide movement to extend the opportunities of higher education to a greater number of youth and adults, voted to establish a community junior college in October, 1959.

1960

1960 - College began operation on the second floor of the southeast wing of the Canton Senior High School building with a class of 187 students.

1970

The dream was realized in 1970 when the new Canton High School was opened.

1971

The history of Augustana Academy came to an end in 1971.

1974

1974 - A portion of Schuyler County, including the Rushville area, became part of the Spoon River College district.

1977

Changes came again 1977, when the building was demolished in order to make room for a new office building.

1981

In 1981 Janice and Ray sold the LewDoc to Louise and Steve Preiss.

1983

1983 - Spoon River College purchased the former Macomb High School building at 208 South Johnson Street.

2002

The fire department has continued to grow to meet Canton's needs The Canton Volunteer Fire Department is housed in their new building, finished in 2002.

2002 - With the help of a federal grant, the college expanded its services to the downtown area in Canton and the Macomb Campus by creating two Technology Learning Centers.

2003

2003 - Construction of new Facilities Maintenance building, allowing the renovation of Engle Hall and the Child Development Center, providing the addition of the Spoon River College Conference Center.

2006

2006 - Board of Trustees approved purchase of former Heilig-Meyers in Macomb for future expansion.

2007

2007 - Board of Trustees approved purchase of building in Havana where college had been leasing space.

2009

/ At an Ohio Department of Transportation meeting, held at the Foltz Community Center, in East Canton, no formal presentation was given, but visitors that night were led to believe the United States Route 30 relocation should start in 2009, pending funding.

2014

Projections through 2014 show that the number of students enrolled will continue to rise.

2017

2017 - Through a partnership with Bluffstone Student Housing, the Snapper Villas apartments opened, providing on-campus housing for students.
