Job Summary
Performs blood-drawing procedures to obtain specimens from young adults (13 years) to geriatric (greater than 65 years) for laboratory testing. In addition, must be able to perform blood-drawing procedures on babies (birth to early childhood up to one year) for laboratory testing. Patient populations for the blood drawing will include immunosuppressed, late-stage cancer, and the morbidly obese patients. Provides phlebotomy training, product evaluation and new application implementation upon request.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Demonstrates the skills and competence for venipuncture procedure.
* Positively identifies patient according to department policies and procedures.
* Confirms accuracy of electronic orders, labels and requisitions according to department policies and procedures.
* Develops a relationship with the patient that is comforting and demonstrates confidence for the venipuncture procedure.
* Properly instruct patients as to how to obtain urine samples and/or 24-hour collections of urine samples and all other samples as needed.
* Demonstrates the skills and competence to accurately review completed laboratory requisitions or electronic orders in Epic.
* Completes all necessary information including the legible documentation of assigned phlebotomy code, collection date, and other required information.
* Properly retrieves electronic orders from Sunquest, Collection manager and Epic as necessary.
* Follows procedures for obtaining "standing order" information according to department policy.
* Includes all requirements in formation for the Blood Bank samples (initials, date, patient name and medical record number on all tubes and requisitions).
* Follows department policies related to the collection of "discharge/transfer", STAT and timed collections.
* Demonstrates the skill and competence necessary to perform the venipuncture and heelstick procedures.
* Selects the best vein or site available for blood drawing.
* Demonstrates skill with various types of needles and other collection equipment.
* Follows correct "order of draw" for vacutainer tubes.
* Follows procedures for the appropriate collection of blood cultures to avoid contamination of specimen.
* Removes the tourniquet according to department policies and procedures.
* Labels all samples in accordance with department policies and procedures.
* Check the collection site prior to leaving the patient.
* Follows all Infection Control guidelines throughout the venipuncture procedure. -Wears appropriate personal protective equipment as required.
* Follows all patient precautions and procedures for isolation.
* Discards all equipment (sharps, glove, etc.) as required.
* Follow hospital Hand Hygiene policies and procedures between all procedures and patients.
* Demonstrates knowledge of collection criteria: correct vacutainer tubes, volume, stability requirements and/or special handling.
* Effectively teaches and trains all new employees, students, and other additional requests for teaching and training. Provides constructive feedback.
* Assists with new product evaluations and the development of new products upon request. Assists with the implementation of new applications and hardware. Provides constructive feedback.
* Follows all instructions applicable to research protocols.
* Collaborates with principle investigator and/or supervisor to draw appropriate tubes for tests requested and meet requirements for timed collections. Transports specimens appropriately according to protocols.
* Completes phlebotomy sheets, logbooks and other documentations as required, including required documentation during a downtime.
* Demonstrates professional behavior and customer service skills at all times.
* Answers all calls/ two way phones in a professional manner. Return the pages within the time required.
* Effectively interacts with supervisor, co-workers and clinical staff to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts.
* Effectively interacts with patients and patient's families.
* Demonstrates a caring and sensitive attitude to all hospital staff, patients and families.
* Works collaboratively as a member of the phlebotomy team at all times. -Follows all policies and procedures related to attendance, absenteeism, tardiness and scheduled breaks.

* Work as a part of the team to provide adequate phlebotomy coverage/including offsites.
* Maintains inventory and stocks supplies.

* Responsible for pagers, two-way phones and other hospital devices.

* Responsible to work weekend and holiday hours according to the needs of the department.

* Two years' experience as BWH phlebotomist with performance evaluation score of effective or above.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
* Knowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients.
* Knowledge to select appropriate vacutainer tubes and volumes for test(s) requested.
* Ability to communicate with patients and families to alleviate fears and anxieties and make them feel comfortable and cared for.
* Physically be able to stand and walk for long periods of time (90% of the day) and transport supplies and specimens as required.

The Phlebotomist is responsible for receiving patients, gathering patient registration information, ordering tests, generating specimen labels, and escorting patients to phlebotomy services. The Phlebotomist performs phlebotomy on all patient populations and is responsible for performing a variety of semi-technical and clerical tasks involving specimen receiving, sorting, data entry, record retrieval, filing, typing envelopes, and responding to telephone inquiries for results, testing, general information, and routing of other calls. This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. This position reports to the Phlebotomy Supervisor and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Qualifications
* High school diploma or equivalent required
* Successful completion of a phlebotomy training program preferred
* Six (6) months direct phlebotomy experience or completion of an 80 hour clinical rotation, preferably at Cooley Dickinson Health Care (CDHC)

* Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, take initiative, make independent decisions, and maintain organized working conditions (even in stressful situations) required

Position Summary:

Qualifications
The Phlebotomist III is responsible for providing phlebotomy services in the lab to North End Waterfront Health (NEWH) patients as ordered by treating providers. The individual draws blood via venipuncture or skin puncture on infant, children, teens, adults and elders. Obtains urine samples and collects various samples for culture. Explains safety protocols and procedures to patients. Is responsible for daily quality measures of Point of Care testing and annual POCT competency of colleagues with final oversight by Nurse Manager.
* Performs venipuncture and skin puncture on infant, children, teen, adult and elder patients.
* Maintains, and updates knowledge of phlebotomy and specimen collection requirements including requisitions, handling and disposal.
* Annually participates in hospital/NEWH required safety education, patient privacy education and skill competency verification.
* Provides excellent customer service to patients and co-workers.
* Checks patient identification against requisition prior to, and at the end of all specimen collection procedures by checking that all information on requisition (s), patient identification tools, and all labels are an exact match.
* Locates vein and draws requested bloods following standard phlebotomy techniques; determines need for special equipment for problem veins.
* Instructs patients in correct procedure for obtaining urine samples and provides patient with proper collection materials
* Ensures adherence to schedules for timed tests such as glucose tolerance and drug levels, and special tests such as STATS, blood culture, and tests required to be obtained in a fasting state including POCT tests
* Identifies a wide variety of tests; selects appropriate tubes for tests, according to the size and metric volume; estimates quantity of blood needed in relation to tests ordered; assembles all necessary equipment; obtains tubes according to the established correct order of draw; labels tubes with patient name, unit number, and date initials requisition; prepares samples for storage/transportation.
* Performs guaiac on stool cards returned to practice in mail, sends results to patient and ordering provider.
* Ensures specimens are ready for transport according to daily schedule.
* Logs and records transport activity accurately.
* Follows all safety (including infection control and hazardous material) policies and procedures.
* Notifies Nurse Manager of unsafe conditions.
* Delivers patient reports and assists in printing/collating of patient reports as needed.
* Arranges STAT specimen transport to MGH or Quest Diagnostics when needed.
* Knows how to respond to emergency in lab such as syncope with venipuncture.
* Assists nurse manager with annual waived testing to other Phlebotomists, MAs, LPNs and RNs

We are searching for a talented Laboratory Asst-Phlebotomist
* $2,500 new hire sign-on bonus for this position. (rehires termed more than 1 year also eligible)*
Hours: 20hrs
Shift: Day shift with 4th Saturday per month; 8:00am - 12:00p varied start and end times
Location: Outreach Lab - Fairhaven, MA

Responsibilities
Under the general supervision and direction of the Manager, Laboratory Site or designee, obtain correct specimens and volumes according to current procedures. Insure that all specimens are appropriately and accurately labeled. Process and deliver specimens to correct laboratory departments. Enter all specimen and patient information in LIS or department logs. Generate accurate reports in a timely fashion and distribute appropriately. Perform phlebotomy on inpatient, outreach clients, home draws, nursing homes, and outreach locations. Maintain equipment and instrumentation.
Qualifications
* Equivalent to successful completion of a college-based, nationally accredited, phlebotomy program or a Medical Laboratory Assistant program.
* Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC or equivalent) is required within two years from date of hire.
* Must be fully vaccinated against seasonal Influenza and the COVID 19 virus or to be exempt from the requirement for medical or personal reasons by signing a statement certifying you are choosing to be exempt from vaccination once hired.
* Compensation: Pay rate will be determined based on level of experience.
Pay Range
USD $21.94 - USD $28.82 /Hr.
