Assure correct set-up, safety and function of all equipment/ supplies necessary in the provision of patient care. Assure adherence to all infectious disease standards in the delivery of all patient care procedures. Understands pharmacological indications, dosages and response to adverse drug reactions. Provides education to patients, families, physicians, nursing and other members of the health care team. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Job Description:
Works as a team with nurses, physicians and other healthcare professionals in the facility to manage patient care.
Responsible for setting up and monitoring oxygen machines including continuous positive airway pressure and bipaps for cardiopulmonary patients. This includes maintaining and ordering supplies for these machines as needed.
Provides respiratory care and therapies to patients who have orders for such services.
Assesses patients who are newly admitted or referred to respiratory services for appropriate respirator care services and therapies.
Assesses new admissions for pneumonia reduction strategies.
Managers and supports residents on ventilator care.
Monitors patient's physiological responses to therapy such as vital signs and labs. Consults with physicians as needed.
Documents assessments, care services and therapies in the patient's electronic medical record.
Participates in patient care planning process as necessary.
Educates patients about cardiopulmonary issues and care. This may include effects of smoking, smoking cessation or provide details about asthma and medications. Also, teaches patients how to use inhaler and other devices.
Assist with education of nurses and nursing staff on cardiopulmonary issues and respiratory care. This also includes education on equipment and inhalation treatments.
Reviews assigned referrals to ensure that care needs can be maintained in the facility.
Assist with emergency care of patients when in the facility such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Must be a high school graduate.
Must have a college degree from an AMA approved respiratory therapy program.
Must have a valid license from the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board.
Must be dependable, flexible, and able to work and cooperate well with all nursing personnel, other departments and have understanding, patience, and tact in working with patients, families, doctors, and others.
Must have ability to make decisions regarding nursing problems.

Duke Life Flight is a CAMTS accredited critical care and Emergency Air and Ground transport agency in Durham, NC, providing services to North Carolina and its surrounding states. We operate two state-of-the-art rotor wing aircraft and a fleet of critical care, and advanced life support ambulances. We are one of few rotor-wing aeromedical Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) capable flight programs in North Carolina. Our respiratory care practitioners with our Life Flight team transport pediatric, and neonatal patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We provide rapid access to health care for patients when time, specialized skills, and/or specialized resources are critical for survival.
General Description of the Job Class
Perform and evaluate diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinical practice, performing work in accordance with physician orders in the neonatal, pediatric and adult patient populations.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Perform all duties and responsibilities required of a Respiratory Care Practitioner I.
Evaluate appropriateness of medical orders.
Proficient in the application of mechanical ventilator modalities.
Proficient in the application of Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NPPV); Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP)
Perform endotracheal intubation under the observation of a Supervisor or Advanced Practitioner. Perform extubations.
Serve as member of the code/ emergency team. Administer medical gases.
Insert nasogastric and orogastric tubes.
Perform tracheotomy tube changes. Perform capnography monitoring.
Transport patients requiring mechanical ventilation or airway protection.
Interpret clinical data to optimize patient clinical objectives.
Participate in clinical rounds with physicians, nurses and other health care providers
Assist with Bronchoscopy. Assist with orientation and training of Level II RT.
Assure safe operations of devices in the MRI.
Qualified for certification in the hyperbaric chamber if applicable to the institution scope of practice
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
Completion of a two year AMA approved Respiratory Care Program - (Associates Degree or the equivalent).
Must maintain annual skill maintenance and annual safety/compliance requirements
Must maintain North Carolina annual license requirements for CEUs
Experience
A minimum of three years (preference of four years) experience in clinical respiratory therapy, including a minimum of one year in intensive care respiratory therapy within a neonatal or pediatric ICU.
Advanced certification required (C-NPT) within two years of hire. If hired with critical care transport experience, C-NPT or NPS certification highly preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Responsible for the overall clinical, technical and administrative functions at the location on record regarding the Home Respiratory Therapist program.

Is responsible to maintain accurate inventory of all Sleep Management/VieMed assets and supplies.

Ensures that vehicle is maintained per applicable accreditation standards at all times.
Is responsible to ensure all pertinent demographic information is updated regularly and with any change in personal or professional status.
