Capital Gazette company history timeline

1884

The Capital, founded as an afternoon paper in 1884, is “the ultimate local newspaper,” said Steve Gunn, a former editor.

1955

Abbott purchased the Maryland Gazette shortly before World War I. Until 1955, the Maryland Gazette was a weekly covering all of Anne Arundel County, with The Evening Capital serving as Annapolis' daily newspaper.

1987

The Sunday Capital was launched in 1987.

1991

But it also strove to hold local institutions accountable, winning national attention in 1991 for a series of stories on hazing and sexual harassment at the Naval Academy.

1994

In December 1994, Capital Gazette launched one of the first newspaper websites in the United States, capitalonline.com.

1998

The site was revised and renamed HometownAnnapolis.com in July 1998.

2005

2014

After it was purchased by the Baltimore Sun Media Group in 2014, the company moved to an office building, across from a local mall, which was the site of Thursday’s shooting.
