Orange County Transportation Authority

Darrell Johnson is the Chief Executive Officer of the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), serving in this position since March 2013. OCTA is responsible for planning, financing, and coordinating Orange County's freeway, street, and rail development, as well as managing bus services, commuter-rail services, and paratransit service. OCTA has 1,500 employees, a $1.1 billion annual budget, and is governed by a 17-voting member board of directors. In collaboration with OCTA’s Board of Directors, Johnson is responsible for providing overall leadership of the agency by formulating and achieving public transportation objectives. He develops and implements short-range and long-range goals and business plans to support the successful implementation of OCTA’s strategic vision. Johnson represents OCTA on local, state and national issues related to transportation programs and policies. In 2012, he was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the American Public Transportation Association. He recently completed the Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program at the Harvard Kennedy School. Johnson’s career in transportation spans nearly 22 years, the last 10 of which have been at OCTA. Johnson has held positions in Planning, Programming, Project Development and Capital Program Delivery, and served as Executive Director of Rail Programs. Prior to being appointed to the position of CEO, Johnson had served as Deputy CEO since March 2010.
