Capital University company history timeline

1830

Capital University was founded on June 3, 1830, as the "Theological Seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Ohio" in Canton, Ohio, 40 years before the founding of Ohio State University, making it the oldest university in Central Ohio.

In 1830, The German Theological Seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Ohio opened in Canton, Ohio with six students.

1850

12, 1850 on a Town Street property bought by the seminary.

1857

Professor Lehmann became the next president of the university in 1857 and at this time saw a great need to move the growing university to a new location.

1917

Credited as Capital's first official basketball coach, Hyer's best season was in 1917-18.

1956

Regan won his one and only OAC titles his first season as head coach in 1956-57.

1957

Capital also made its first NCAA Torunament appearance in 1957

1960

The ALC existed only three decades, until 1960, when it in turn participated in a larger merger with the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church Danish to form The American Lutheran Church.

1988

The second ALC lasted until the formation of the current Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in 1988, with offices in Chicago, Illinois.

1992

Obtained in 1992, the wall was given on long-term loan from Hansa Consulting, a German-based corporation.

1995

Andy Carlson has been at Capital University since 1995, teaching surveys and special topics courses in United States and African history as well as interdisciplinary seminars focused on race, ethnic, and gender relations, development, and food security.

1998

The library was named in 1998 for Josiah Blackmore, a well-known legal scholar and former president of the University.

2001

The Capital Center is a 126,000-square-foot recreational and athletic complex opened in 2001.

2009

The Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year guided the Crusaders to a school-record 26 wins and its second-ever berth in the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2009.

2011

According to an economic impact study, Capital University provides nearly $162 million in earnings, employment, and output to the eight county Columbus metro area based on 2011-12 data.

2012

The first and second floors of Blackmore Library were renovated in Summer 2012.

2013

During the summer of 2013 the Harry C. Moores Campus Center underwent a multi million dollar renovation.

2016

On February 9, 2016, Capital announced Doctor Elizabeth L. Paul as the university's president elect.

2020

On July 13, 2020, the university Board of Trustees announced plans to retire the Crusader nickname and the “Cappy” mascot following a 15-month long study.
