ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Coastal Villages Longline, a subsidiary of Coastal Villages Region Fund, is currently seeking applications for a Captain to operate one of our Freezer Longliners. The primary job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, working on-board our fishing vessel operating off the western coasts of Washington and Alaska. The Captain is expected to safely and effectively navigate the vessel, supervise and discipline the crew, conduct safety drills, and fulfill all duties regarding reporting requirements and paperwork. This position may also be responsible for managing shipyard work, loading and unloading supplies on the vessel, cleaning vessel and equipment, and performing other duties. Applicants are required to provide current USCG License with STCW endorsements and other merchant mariner documentation as necessary. This position requires three years experience as Captain of a Freezer Longliner in the Bearing Sea fishery or five years as Captain on another Bering Sea commercial vessel. The position also requires a minimum of three years or more experience as a deckhand, bosun or mate on a commercial fishing vessel.

Specific Duties Include:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is strenuous and sometimes hazardous due to exposure to operating machinery, mechanical parts, fumes, chemicals, pressurized fluids, vibration and with the vessel operating under all types of weather conditions including extreme cold. This means standing, walking and maintaining balance in rough seas or other types of weather.
Both hands must be capable of grabbing, holding or gripping rope, rails, equipment and vessel structures for frequent periods of time. Forceful grasping along with repetitive finger and hand use is occasional.
Applicant must also be able to occasionally sit, kneel, crouch and crawl. Applicants must be able to climb up and down, safely ascend and descend ladders, work in small and confined spaces, and pass all safety test requirements.

I. Command, Navigation, and Safety Authority
Absolute Authority: Responsible for the daily operation of the vessel, including navigation, docking, anchoring, and maneuvering.

Resource Use Compliance: Responsible for knowing and understanding all Federal and State resource use regulations and restrictions, and ensuring all related record keeping (e.g., Forest Service Actual Use Forms).
Encounter Log: Maintain and periodically transmit an "Encounter Log" detailing charter vessels encountered while at anchor, including guest numbers and activities.
III. Financial Oversight and Administration
Budget Management: Responsible for tracking all vessel purchasing done by the crew during the season, maintaining expenses within budgeted amounts established by the Operations office.
Receipt Submission: Forward all expense receipts and submit a monthly financial accounting report summarizing checking and petty cash activity to the comptroller.
IV. Personnel and Crew Management
Crew Oversight: Oversee all crewmembers, either directly or through department heads (First Mate, Head Chef, Head Steward). Ensure every crewmember has an adequate daily assignment.
Workload Coordination: Monitor the work schedules of all crewmembers and coordinate with department heads to adjust workloads, ensuring everyone receives adequate and comparable off-duty and rest time.
Training: Provide, or assign to an experienced crewmember, hands-on training and orientation to new crewmembers. Must offer hands-on training to the First Mate to ensure command-ready competence.
Performance Management: Produce brief written performance evaluations for all crewmembers in accordance with TBC Employee Handbook guidelines.
End-of-Season Release: Review and approve all departmental inventory reports (submitted by the First Mate) before and after each season.
V. Guest Interaction and Tip Management
Guest Activities: Oversee all guest planning and activities, establishing a radio watch to ensure overall safety, organization, and communication are maintained at all times.
Tip Protocol (Mandatory): Solely responsible for accepting tips from guests. Must keep an accurate log of tip income and distribution, attest to its accuracy in writing, and submit a tip income and distribution report to the Company comptroller after each trip.
Minimum Requirements and Physical Demands
Required Qualifications:
USCG License: Must possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard Master license appropriate for the tonnage and route of the assigned vessel (Alaska itinerary).
Communication: Must have hearing, vision (including color and depth perception), and vocal abilities that allow for effective communication via VHF radio and safe navigation day and night, in close quarters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES Supervisory:

Liaises with EL to provide the best expedition experience to the guests.
Monitors and counsels work performance throughout the year, and conducts written performance evaluations. Ensures that other officers complete the same.
Coaches, disciplines, and/or terminates crew as necessary in a timely and appropriate manner, seeking the guidance and support of Human Resources as needed.
Maintains professional demeanor with guests, crew, staff, agents, officials, and the public.

Conducts daily informal meetings with the HM, EL, CE, CM to map the day's operations/activities and guest welfare.
Conducts weekly informational meetings with the staff, officers and crew.

Administrative:
Distributes all information to and from officers, crew, staff, guests, and the Seattle and New York offices.
With the Purser, prepares customs and immigration paperwork and personally attends the meetings with officials to clear the vessel.
Oversees all reporting of vessel incidents (hull, crew, staff, guest).
Through the Officers, oversees the management, operation, maintenance and repair of the vessel.
Through the Officers, oversees all accounting reports, payroll, inventory and requisitions.
Watch Duty:
Performs bridge navigation and deck watch as needed, especially in challenging navigational transits and harbor limits. Determines geographical position of the ship, using all available means such as GPS, radar ranges, visual observations, depth sounders, etc.
Records necessary entries in navigation and radio logs.
Handles the vessel in docking, anchoring, piloting, en route, in close quarters and open sea conditions.
Acts as Radio Officer to handle ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore, and radio telephone calls en route and dockside.
Navigates vessel to ensure avoidance of marine hazards such as reefs, outlying shoals, shallow waters, etc. using aids to navigation such as lights, lighthouses, and buoys.
Assigns and directs deckhands to lookout and helm duties as needed.
Completes pilotage logs for trips completed in Alaska, British Columbia, and on the Columbia and Snake Rivers to meet pilotage requirements and stand watch unsupervised.
Small Boat Operations:
Drives inflatable boats as necessary.
Oversees and assists with loading guests, staff, and crew in and out of inflatable boats.
Safety and Security:
Oversees safety briefings for guests and coordinates with the Chief Mate for on-board instructive drills for guests, staff and crew.
Ensures vessel compliance to company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures and requests supervisory assistance/guidance when necessary.
Conducts periodic inspections to ensure that crew and guests observe regulations pertaining to safe vessel operation.
Oversees the security of the vessel both at sea and at dock; ensures gangway watch is posted at all times while at dock.
Coordinates off-ship emergency medical aid. Assists the Chief Mate in administering first aid treatment and in documenting medical incident reports.
Oversees all drug and alcohol testing as required by the U.S. Coast Guard and Company policy.
Prepares the vessel for and attends all U.S. Coast Guard annual drydocks and other inspections as required.
Participates in company and shore-side training as required by the company.
Maintains familiarity and compliance with the ISM and ISPS Code and requirements as well as USCG, Transport Canada, and Health Canada Requirements.
Ensures compliance with the company Safety Management System including Emergency Response activities.
Guest/ Public Relations:
Hosts various social functions on board, such as the Captain's Welcome Aboard and Farewell Nights, as well as participates in guest activities such as re-caps, barbeques, dining with guests, etc.
Ensures that Lindblad Expeditions maintains a positive image with all local agents, officials, and area residents.
QUALIFICATIONS:
