The Opportunity: Tetra Tech is adding a USCG Captain at our Bothell, WA location to support our marine services, offshore energy, river restoration and remediation businesses. Our personnel specialize in the acquisition of bathymetric, topographic, geophysical and oceanographic data and environmental sampling throughout the United States and internationally.
Work locations include inland lakes and rivers, ports and harbors and near coastal and offshore sites in support of our public, government and private clients. We conduct surveying and field investigations for remediation and restoration planning, underwater mapping, engineering evaluations including detailed underwater infrastructure assessments for submarine cables and pipelines, dredging, habitat investigations, oceanographic studies and hydroelectric dam assessments.
This is an On-Call position.

Your Role:
* Work aboard boats from ~12-250 feet in length, domestically and internationally.
* Independently manage and operate Tetra Tech-owned vessels from 12-50 feet at project locations all over the USA.
* Take individual responsibility for all aspects of vessel operation including safe navigation, towing, launch and recovery, maintenance of safety, mechanical and electrical systems with minimal or no assistance.
* Independently operate as the vessel master and make appropriate decisions and recommendations while also following the guidance of a field survey lead and/or project manager.
* Operate the vessel and safely manage deck activities while collecting multibeam echosounder, single beam echosounder and geophysical survey data, sampling sediment and water with multiple types of sampling equipment and deploying and recovering oceanographic platforms and moorings.
* Configure, operate and repair vessels in remote unfamiliar locations, installing hardware and instrumentation using the materials and tools at hand.
* Leverage your experience and knowledge of vessel systems and capabilities with an understanding of project goals and identify, communicate and mediate risks to allow completion of all tasks safely and effectively.
* Develop and follow plans, specifications, SOPs, procedures and promote safe work practices.
* Demonstrated competence in Microsoft Office, Windows OS, and experience with terrestrial, hydrographic and/or geophysical survey and charting software packages.
* Setup, operate, maintain and troubleshoot vessel's motors, controls, electronics, cabling and hardware.
* Inspect and maintain vessel trailers including repair of axles, tires, brakes, bearings and electrical components.
* Pilot boats precisely along survey lines displayed on a navigation computer with pole mounted or towed survey systems attached to the vessel.
* Be self-motivated, hardworking, ethical, trustworthy and dependable.
* Have strong communication skills and strong desire to learn and do new things.
* Be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
* Travel for domestic and foreign work, ~40% of the year, with assignments typically ranging from days to six weeks is required.
* The ability to work in the field in inclement weather as well as offshore for weeks at a time is required.
* Physical ability to load/unload equipment (lifting 50 lbs.), walk safely over rugged terrain and up/down ships ladders is required.
* Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, USCG and OSHA regulations, laws, and industry standards.
* Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
* Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
* Additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
* USCG 100TN Captains license (OUPV/ "Six-pack" Captains license may be considered).
* Minimum of 5-8 years of experience actively piloting and navigating and maintaining vessels as a licensed merchant mariner.
* The candidate will have more than 5 years of experience and demonstrated proficiency in operating small vessels from 12-50ft in length . Experience as master, mate or engineer on vessels larger than 50 feet is desirable but not required.
* Have current STCW basic safety training certificate desirable.
* Commercial driver's license and experience towing oversize trailer loads is desirable but not required.
* Experience working in a construction or consulting, multi-client, fast-paced environment, with changes in daily activities is highly desirable.
* Instrumentation experience with some combination of: Echosounders, GNSS/GPS receivers, chart plotters, Radar, mobile LiDAR, single beam or multibeam echo-sounders (MBES), sidescan sonar, GPS-integrated inertial navigation systems, and underwater videos are desirable.
* Experience with the following sampling equipment is beneficial: Vibracorer, Van Veen, Niskin samplers, otter-trawls, box-corer, and gravity corer is desirable.
* Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions and be able to pass a USCG physical.

Compensation:
Pay commensurate with experience.
Pay Range: $32.00hr. - $48.00hr.

Coastal Villages Longline, a subsidiary of Coastal Villages Region Fund, is currently seeking applications for a Captain to operate one of our Freezer Longliners. The primary job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, working on-board our fishing vessel operating off the western coasts of Washington and Alaska. The Captain is expected to safely and effectively navigate the vessel, supervise and discipline the crew, conduct safety drills, and fulfill all duties regarding reporting requirements and paperwork. This position may also be responsible for managing shipyard work, loading and unloading supplies on the vessel, cleaning vessel and equipment, and performing other duties. Applicants are required to provide current USCG License with STCW endorsements and other merchant mariner documentation as necessary. This position requires three years experience as Captain of a Freezer Longliner in the Bearing Sea fishery or five years as Captain on another Bering Sea commercial vessel. The position also requires a minimum of three years or more experience as a deckhand, bosun or mate on a commercial fishing vessel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is strenuous and sometimes hazardous due to exposure to operating machinery, mechanical parts, fumes, chemicals, pressurized fluids, vibration and with the vessel operating under all types of weather conditions including extreme cold. This means standing, walking and maintaining balance in rough seas or other types of weather.
Both hands must be capable of grabbing, holding or gripping rope, rails, equipment and vessel structures for frequent periods of time. Forceful grasping along with repetitive finger and hand use is occasional.
Applicant must also be able to occasionally sit, kneel, crouch and crawl. Applicants must be able to climb up and down, safely ascend and descend ladders, work in small and confined spaces, and pass all safety test requirements.

Permanent Full-time Professional Staff position based in Woodinville, WA (salaried)
The Port Captain is an integral member of Schmidt Ocean Institute's (SOI) Maritime Infrastructure Division and part of the shore-based management team responsible for operating the Institute's Global-Class research vessel Falkor (too). This involves ship management, including oversight of the recruitment and management of vessel crew, shoreside management of interior and deck departments, and assisting with logistics during in-port and shipyard periods, the preparation of budgets, cruise planning, and implementing procedures and documentation to meet regulatory and policy requirements.
ResponsibilitiesCrewing
Ensure the Ship is properly crewed, including oversight of recruitment and termination, interviews, and selection of permanent and temporary crew.

Shoreside Manager of the Deck and Interior Departments,, in collaboration with Captains.

Ensure the Ship is capable of conducting the planned work and coordinate with the crew to set up the deck(s) appropriately.
Regulatory
Monitors for and responds to Ship Emergency calls as part of the 24/7 Ship's Emergency Response Team.
Work with DPA to ensure all Ship documents are valid and updated.
Work with DPA to manage and maintain Ship's Safety Management System (SMS) which include the requirements of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, Emergency Plans, and Drug & Alcohol Testing Programs.
Coordinate inspections with the Flag State authorities in collaboration with the DPA, SPS Maritime Ltd's Point of Contact for Flag State.
Assist with annual Classification Society surveys in collaboration with the Director of Engineering, SPS Maritime Ltd.'s Point of Contact for Classification.

Oversee Shipboard Management Committee.
Oversight of compliance of Bridge equipment in collaboration with the Captain.

Familiarity with the various requirements of cognizant regulatory bodies (e.g. Red Ensign Group, DNV, USCG, ABS) concerned with Special Purpose Ships and research vessel operation.
Applicants must hold a valid and current passport of any nationality; validity must be at least six months.
Proficient in Google Suite, Microsoft 365, ship management and crew management software, and project management software.
Preferred Qualifications
Three years experience in similar positions or responsibilities leading or supporting complex oceanographic operations over a wide geographic range.
