Captain Statistics in the US

The average employee age for captains is 42 years. The captain workforce reached a whopping 11,204 in 2020!

Among captains, we discovered that 34.2% of them are women, while 61.0% are men. The most common race/ethnicity among captains is White, which makes up 81.0% of all captains. Comparatively, there are 7.6% of the Black or African American ethnicity and 6.4% of the Hispanic or Latino ethnicity. The majority of captains are located in NY, New York and IL, Chicago.

Captains are more likely to work at private companies in comparison to public companies. Taking it a step further, captains are more likely to find a job in the hospitality industry. Looking at captain statistics, we found was that Alaska, Hawaii, Arizona, California and New Mexico are where captains find the highest salaries.

From where do we know all information about captain demographics? We analyzed 59,680 captains resumes to find out what the average demographics are for the job position. Just to be clear, by demographics we mean the study of population-based factors like age, race, and sex. On top of scouring through resumes, we also took note of job proposals from employers and Census Bureau data. And guess what? We found some pretty interesting information.

We assessed our data to determine the typical level of education for captains. The most common degree for captains is bachelor's degree. In fact, 62% of captains earn that degree. A close second is high school diploma with 14% and rounding it off is associate degree with 9%.
