Brief Description of Duties: The R/V Seawolf Captain reports directly to the Fleet Manager, and is responsible for all aspects of the 80' R/V Seawolf's operations and maintenance at Stony Brook University's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS). The Captain is assisted by full-time technicians, and additional crew members as needed (as filled by other staff positions, temporary deckhands, or hired students). The role primarily involves operating the R/V Seawolf, though occasional assistance with smaller SoMAS vessels may be required. The Captain ensures the vessel's safe operation, maintenance, and effective support of SoMAS research and educational activities, which often include multiple trawling cruises. The successful incumbent must have the ability to undertake fieldwork in varying conditions and must be able to handle sampling gear for fieldwork. Key Responsibilities:Captain: Serve as Captain, ensuring the safety of the vessel, crew, and passengers. Ensure compliance with all US Coast Guard and regulatory requirements. Maintain all required logs and submit daily reports. Conduct bottom trawling/research respectfully. Operations: Safely operate shipboard scientific equipment and sampling apparatus.
