1987

1987: The first Car Toys store opens in Bellevue, Washington.

Car Toys was founded in 1987 by Dan Brettler, who continues as the President and CEO of Car Toys.

1991

Together, these stores generated $9 million in sales in 1991, the year Brettler redoubled his efforts to make Car Toys a leader in customer service.

1992

And in a strange turn of fortunes, Mattel acquired Matchbox in 1992, retaining that ownership today.

1997

The company was eventually purchased by Mattel in 1997, uniting rivals Matchbox and Hot Wheels under one roof.

1999

Car Toys made its first move outside the Pacific Northwest in 1999, opening a store in Denver, Colorado, in March.

Taking on an Investment Partner: 1999

1999: TA Associates takes a minority equity position in Car Toys.

2000

2000: One year after entering the Denver market, Car Toys expands into Dallas.

Dan’s Birthday Bash commercials with his (studio) mom began and ran until 2000.

2004

In 2004, Twice Magazine ranked Car Toys as the 5th largest national mobile electronic retailer.

2011

2011 was the first year that the OEMs stopped offering cassette decks in new vehicles.
