It was founded on February 28, 1969, as the Caribbean Junior College in the municipality of Bayamon.
United States relations with the island are governed by the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, which outlines the United States commitment to help Taiwan maintain its military defense.
In 1990, after starting to offer graduate studies, it was renamed to Caribbean University.
1991: Hiram S Walters Resource Centre was officially opened to replace the old West Indies College library.
1998: The Aston and Novelette Tai Business Skills Centre was officially opened.
1999: WIC received the Charter for university status from the Government of Jamaica and was renamed Northern Caribbean University (NCU).
2000: The university inaugurated its first doctoral programme (the PhD in education) through the College of Graduate Education and Leadership.
2002: The multipurpose University Gymnatorium, was officially opened.
2003: The Ellen G. White Seventh-Day Research Centre was opened.
2008: The Hyacinth Chen School of Nursing was officially opened, funded largely by Michael Lee-Chin, Jamaican businessman and philanthropist.
• The Microsoft Imagine Cup on behalf of Jamaica in 2010.
2010: The university gained further international acclaim when one of its two teams at the finals of the Microsoft Imagine Cup software competition copped first place in the interoperability award category to be declared world champions.
2013: The Agri-Research Laboratories were officially opened.
2015: NCU team Jargro earned first place in the 2015 staging of the DBJ sponsored National Business Model Competition
In 2016, the university expanded its STEM academic programs.
2017: NCU team Natsima continued the NCU tradition, placing first in the National Business Model Competition.
2019: NCU placed first and second in the National Science and Technology Competition.
