1949

The hotel opened on December 9, 1949.

1954

The drink was first served on August 15, 1954.

In 1954, bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero spent three months creating a mix of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice.

1978

After three months of perfecting the recipe, Marrero felt that the drink finally captured the flavors of Puerto Rico and named it the “Piña Colada.” The new cocktail was served by Marrero for 35 years, and became the official drink of Puerto Rico in 1978.

1998

After managing the hotel for 48 years, Hilton International bought the property in 1998.

1999

After managing the hotel for 48 years, Hilton International bought the property in 1998. It reopened on December 25, 1999 celebrating its 50th anniversary after $50 million in renovations.

2004

In 2004, Caribe Hilton was presented with a proclamation signed by Puerto Rico’s Governor Sila María Calderón, supporting the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Piña Colada.

2005

In 2005, the hotel was expanded with the huge Paseo Caribe complex, including shops, restaurants, and 264 villas marketed as the Condado Lagoon Villas.

2017

In January 2017, ownership of the hotel was transferred to Park Hotels & Resorts when that company was spun off from Hilton Worldwide.

In September 2017, the hotel was heavily damaged by Hurricane Maria, forcing it to close.

2019
