1914

In 1914, a group of African American doctors created the Medley Hospital in a house with 12 beds.

1915

But before the new hospital could open in 1915, Burrell himself was forced to travel to Washington, D.C., in the baggage car of a train to treat severe gallstones, and he died there.

1925

The Burrell Memorial Training School for Nurses was able to attain accreditation in 1925.

1935

By 1935, Burrell Memorial Hospital had an active staff of six black doctors, with 20 white doctors as consultants.

1947

In 1947, it became the first hospital to be directed by a member of the American College of Hospital Administrators.

1950

In 1950, Roanoke Valley residents pledged $2.1 million for the construction of two new replacement hospitals for Roanoke Memorial and Burrell Memorial.

1955

The new, 80-bed Burrell Memorial Hospital opened in 1955.

1965

In the wake of the 1965 enactment of Medicare laws and Civil Rights acts, patients began choosing to go to the area hospitals that had opened their doors to African-Americans, or their doctors were choosing to send them to other facilities.

1979

The building was reopened in 1979 as the Burrell Home for Adults.

1988

Roanoke Hospital Association, with Burrell as a subsidiary, grew into a regional health care system in 1988—Carilion Health System.

1989

The author, John Carreyrou, explored Carilion’s history, including the 1989 antitrust case, its expanding”market clout,” and the strides toward its goal of vertical integration.

1998

Murphy became president and CEO of that new health system and stayed with Seton until 1998, when he relocated to Roanoke to head Carilion Health System.

2001

Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare collaborated with Carilion in 2001 to turn the historic Burrell facility into an integrated behavioral healthcare service center.

2006

His formal plan was presented in fall 2006.

In Fall 2006, Murphy, his staff, and the leadership board of Carilion Health System announced their plan to create a new model for Carilion management characterized by teamwork and salaried physicians and other caregivers focused on patients across the spectrum of care.

Despite the controversy, Carilion has shown no signs of slowing: it has stayed the course outlined in Fall 2006.

2007

Doctor Murphy’s total compensation was almost $2.3 million in 2007.

2008

In Roanoke, Va., Carilion’s Fees Exceed Those of Competitors: The $4,727 Colonoscopy” was published on the front page of the Wall Street Journal August 28, 2008.

The August 2008 Wall Street Journal article resulted in a community uproar and fueled physician's’ efforts to air their concerns about Carilion, including its anti competitive actions and unfair pricing, and their desire to have open referrals for patients from outside Carilion’s health network.

On August 28, 2008, less than 24 hours after publication of Carreyrou’s Wall Street Journal article, Carilion responded.

2009

On July 20, 2009, the Virginia State Council for Higher Education approved the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine as a postsecondary institution.

2010

Nestled in the Commonwealth of Virginia between Salem and Vinton is the city of Roanoke, whose population was approximately 98,000 in 2010.

In 2010, Murphy was paid $2.27 million ($1.37 million in salary and $900,000 in benefits).

Ground was broken for the much-anticipated university in early 2008. It’s first class matriculated in fall 2010.

2012

In 2012, he became the operating officer of Radius Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in health-related companies.

2018

Carilion Clinic contributed more than $3.2 billion and nearly 24,000 jobs to Virginia’s economy in 2018, according to an economic impact study released today by Carilion and The University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service’s Center for Economic and Policy Studies.

30, 2018, Carilion’s fiscal year, including spending and employment growth of the Carilion Clinic system independent of its partnerships with Virginia Tech and Radford University.
