The laboratory technicians in the Century Aluminum Central Laboratory are responsible for safely, accurately, and reliably performing the routine analyses required for the safe, efficient, and profitable operation of the Century Aluminum plants located in:

The successful completion of these objectives requires a person with an unrelenting focus on safety, a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills. In order to provide the requisite analyses in a timely manner, the individuals in this role share the responsibility of completing many of our analyses in the early morning to provide timely results for production employees to begin their shift.
In this role you will be expected to work a 5-day work week working 8-hour shifts, typically Monday through Friday. Shift start time will vary between 3AM and 7AM depending on laboratory needs, and additional hours may be required as operational demands dictate.
Responsibilities
Learn, accept and live Century Aluminum's Safety Mission Statement
Audit the quality and validity of all phases of samples submitted to the laboratory for chemical analysis. Subsequent analysis of all process control, raw material, environmental, industrial hygiene and final product samples utilizing prescribed procedures.
Administer internal quality control practices required to ensure conformity of all sampling and subsequent analysis for verification of chemistry for all phases of plant materials by using complex analytical techniques.
Provide chemical analyses to operating departments using various computerized instruments, or by use of wet/gravimetric techniques.
Perform other functions in the various sections of the lab such as environmental, quantometer, transformer oil, metallographer, raw and process control material, as required to ensure the orderly completion of laboratory business.
Perform preventive maintenance on various types of instrumentation in the lab involving x-ray systems and other laboratory equipment.
Evaluate, advise, and recommend appropriate operational adjustments to ensure environmental systems are operated and maintained to conform to the intent and spirit of applicable EPA and OSHA legislation while maximizing production.
All instruments are calibrated and checked prior to any analyses being performed. If an instrument does not meet standard measures then troubleshooting process will begin until the problem is corrected. If the incumbent cannot solve the problem then the vendor is contacted for technical support.

Operates physical, chemical, optical, and analytical equipment for samples submitted to the CTC Analytical laboratory.
Responsible for instrument calibrations, verifications, and calibration standards
Maintains instrumentation calibration reference standards
Maintains instruments and coordinates annual PM's, service calls, and service contracts
Manages collecting and shipping samples for 3rd party analysis
Records and tabulates data in laboratory notebook in legal form following defined procedures.
Observes irregularities, unusual behavior, or trends in tests, and interprets causes.
Performs troubleshooting on instrumentation when needed to diagnose and resolve issues.
Communicates the results of work to Manager following prescribed procedures.
Work with sample tracking database, including entering, reporting and logging out samples.
Prepares periodic written reports.

Conduct research to stay up to date with analytical instrument trends and submit ideas for cost saving and new or improved test method opportunities.

Ensure that all activities within the laboratory are risk assessed and documented.

Qualifications
Minimum education required is Bachelors of Science degree level in chemistry or equivalent science with 5 - 10 years of experience in an analytical laboratory.
Must be able to follow instructions, work independently and safely in a laboratory environment and work on several projects at the same time.
Strong written communication skills are required.
A background in analytical instruments, preferably within the consumer products industry, is a plus.

WHAT YOUR DAY WILL LOOK LIKE
Bench tests physical properties of agriculture products, such as pH, density, contact angle, water content, surface tension, viscosity, emulsion performances and flashpoint.
Assists in screening pure and diluted product mixtures for compatibility and reports findings.
Helps troubleshoot mixing and quality complaints submitted by Helena field team members and other end users.
Tests samples involved in Product Quality Notifications and competitive product analysis.

Team members will be trained in the proper use and care of assigned PPE. POLARIS Laboratories provides the required PPE. It is your responsibility to report defective, damaged or lost PPE, or equipment that does not fit properly, to your Manager.
To ensure safety throughout the facility, all employees are required to maintain up to date HAZMAT, OSHA, RCRA, Methylene Chloride, and General Laboratory Safety training as defined within the POLARIS Quality System.

PURPOSE/SCOPE:
Support production operations with ability to perform regular production inspections & new tooling layouts by using any lab measurement equipment. Operates and maintains OGP, CMM, vision system, and all other Metrology lab equipment. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Capable of using all lab manual & programmable measurement equipment.
Able to complete basic programming for metrology equipment to measure parts efficiently & accurately.

Basic blueprint reading skills including GD & T.
Understanding of lab operations, interactions with other depts., & purpose (ref. lab mission statement).
Capable of using all lab activity logs properly.
Understands lab safety.
Contributes to continuous improvement activities.
Responsible for maintaining a neat, clean, and well-organized quality lab.
Other appropriate duties as required by the Metrology Lab Manager.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:
A high school diploma or equivalent.
Two years' experience using spreadsheets.
Excellent data entry skills.
Ability to read blueprints.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION
CMI/CQT certification or refresher course.
Working knowledge of:
ISO 9000 / IATF 16949
SPC (Statistical Process Control)
Basic Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
R & R studies
Computers
Mechanical inspection and layout techniques
Must be able to use:
Vision System
Optical Comparator
C.M.M. (Coordinate Measuring Machine)
Basic math skills
SPC (Statistical Process Control)
Computers
Minimum of three years' experience in quality control or a related area (performing layout and sample submissions, capability studies, or, three years in quality at Trans-Matic).
Must be able to work independently and well under pressure.
