traces its origins to April 15th, 1910 when a certificate of incorporation was filed with the secretary of state.
The first clubhouse was built where the present one stands, which, in 1910 was about two miles outside the city limits.
It was founded in 1910 as Raleigh Country Club, with the name later changed, and incorporated eight years later by three men holding stock worth $1,200.
Originally known as the Raleigh Country Club, the Carolina Country Club was renamed in 1918.
When the second clubhouse was opened in 1921, Club dues were $3 a month.
On Sunday, February 1st, 1948 at 3:00am, residents along Glenwood Avenue were awakened again by the glare of a tremendous fire in the clubhouse.
The vision that spawned Carolina Trace began in 1959 with Joyce and W. M. ("Bill") Arnold, Jr.
The initiation fee at Carolina Country Club has grown from a mere $800 in 1961 to more than $40,000 today, says lifelong member Harvey Johnson, and monthly dues now stand at about $410.
In another of the coincidences that abound in the story of Carolina Trace, he died in 1961, the year the first ABC store opened in Sanford.
The Sanford Herald's February 10, 1969, headline, "Giant Golf-Recreational Site Planned for Area," was a shock.
They were later joined by Joe Brinn, Ken Eason, Jim Hickey, Doctor W. R. Hartness, C. B. Foushee, Van R. Groce, Jimmy Thomas, and others; and Sandhill Properties, Inc., was formed in 1969.
The golf course and dam were started in 1970, the year when the first lots (in North Shore) were sold.
The Arnolds sold their interest in 1973 but continued to live here.
By 1985 the Club's membership had grown to 1,151 members.
In 1987, the members purchased Carolina Trace.
Total revenue has increased by nearly 6 percent since fiscal 2003, when the club brought in about $7.5 million.
Today, according to fiscal 2005 tax records, the club is on solid financial footing, posting revenue of more than $7.9 million, comprised, in large part, of more than $5.2 million in "membership dues and assessments."
In the interim, a new facility, the Marathon Bar and Grille opened in March of 2009.
Escalante Golf, Inc purchased Carolina Trace Country Club from the membership in July of 2014 with the intentions of continuing the Club with vision of its original founders.
