Summary:
The Surgical/Trauma Respiratory Clinical Specialist is a highly skilled and experienced respiratory care practitioner responsible for providing advanced clinical support, education, and consultation within surgical and trauma units. This role serves as a clinical expert in respiratory therapy, working collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal respiratory care for critically ill and injured patients. The specialist plays a key role in protocol development, clinical competency, quality improvement, and staff education related to advanced respiratory modalities and interventions.
Responsibilities:
+ Provide advanced respiratory therapy care to surgical, trauma, and other critically ill patients in accordance with hospital protocols and best practices.
+ Serve as a clinical resource and consultant for respiratory therapists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers in surgical and trauma units.
+ Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based respiratory care protocols and policies.
+ Participate in trauma resuscitations, surgical procedures requiring respiratory support, and high-acuity care situations.
+ Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of respiratory care interventions, recommending adjustments as needed to improve patient outcomes.
+ Lead or support clinical rounds with multidisciplinary teams, contributing respiratory expertise in case reviews and care planning.
+ Provide education, training, and mentorship to staff therapists, including orientation of new hires and continuing education on advanced respiratory practices (e.g., ARDS management, advanced airway techniques, mechanical ventilation strategies).
+ Collaborate with physicians and advanced practice providers in developing care plans and implementing respiratory support strategies.
+ Assist in data collection, research, and quality improvement initiatives related to respiratory care in surgical/trauma populations.
+ Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and guidelines (e.g., JCAHO, AARC, state licensure boards).

**Qualifications**
**Respiratory Therapist I:**
+ Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
+ Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board and registry eligible by the National Board of Respiratory Care (CRT or RRT). Must be registered (CRT or RRT) within 6 months of hire. BLS on hire.
+ No prior experience required.
**Respiratory Therapist II:**
+ Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
+ Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board and registry eligible by the National Board of Respiratory Care (CRT or RRT). Under the Clinical Supervision of the Medical Director of Respiratory Care and the overall supervision of the Manager, Assistant Manager and Respiratory Care Supervisor the Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP), II functions in a safe, expedient, and cost-effective manner in providing, responding to patient needs and documenting respiratory care and services provided. The Respiratory Care Practitioner II is involved in the Clinical Ladder program which is a voluntary promotion system that recognizes health care professionals who demonstrate advanced knowledge, critical thinking skills, and professional development.
Minimum Requirements

Responsibilities:
- Administers respiratory patient care under the direction of a physician. Identifies and pursues expected patient outcomes in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team.
- Educates patients, especially those with complex care issues, within hospital setting and for post-discharge care. Topics include but are not limited to:
o Bronchodilator usage
o Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) equipment usage, care and maintenance
o Ramifications of smoking / tobacco usage and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
o Asthma symptom management and medication usage
- Administers aerosol medications, oxygen therapy and other components of standard respiratory care. Provides for all aspects of airway management including aspiration of established airways.
- Intubates critical care patients as directed by a physician. Selects specialized ventilator modes such as pressure-regulated volume control (PRVC) in order to manage specific disease processes. Monitors intubated patients on an ongoing, round the clock basis. Weans intubated patients from ventilation through evaluative measures including spontaneous breathing trials.
- Evaluates blood-gas levels through the use of arterial punctures for all intubated patients and as ordered by a physician. Adjusts care as needed, including parameters of respiratory equipment.
- Implements the use of a range of respiratory equipment for breathing assistance and secretion management. Tests equipment, patient response and leads patient through breathing exercises.

QUALIFICATIONS
Hired candidates will be required to obtain Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 90 days of hire date. Training and assessment will be offered by the organization.
Required
- Must have active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) status as administered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
- Must hold a current North Carolina Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license as issued by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board (NCRCB).
- Must hold active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Preferred
- One year of work experience in an adult critical care setting.
- Experience working in a pediatric / neonatal care setting.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
