Carroll County Health Services Corporation history

1960: Construction of Carroll County General Hospital begins.

CCGH opened on October 1, 1961.

On September 20, 1965, Jack Tindle was employed as administrator.

Only five years later, the ground-breaking was held for the hospital's first addition,a patient unit called called 1 Northwest, in October 1966.

Library service to the South Carroll area was first provided by a 2,100 square foot branch which opened in 1968 in the Eldersburg Improvement Association Building.

The Taneytown Community Library opened as a branch of the Carroll County Public Library on January 9, 1969 in a storefront building on Baltimore Street.

1971 - Life Enrichment (now Library Link) established to serve older adults

1975: The hospital is awarded its first two-year accreditation from the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

In 1976, a fund-raising campaign for the second addition began with the goal of $2.5 million.

1979 - Circulation system was automated through a partnership with Baltimore County Public Library

1980 - Westminster Branch opened as a full-service library branch

1983 - Eldersburg Branch opened as a full-service library branch

1984: The Carroll County Children's Fund is launched by pediatrician Doctor Karl Green to help families pay for needed medical services for children younger than 19.

1985 - Service to the Carroll County Detention Center was established

* New Physician Office Building to be completed in 1987

The Taneytown Branch at 10 Grand Drive opened to the public in February, 1989.

1990 - North Carroll opened as a full-service library branch

1991: A 20-bed Behavioral Health Unit opens for adults and adolescents with psychiatric conditions.

1992 - 3,472 children participated in CCPL's summer reading program

Airy Community Branch moved to the former American Grocery Building, and in 1993 a new full-service Mount Airy Branch opened on Ridge Avenue.

1994 - CCPL began offering Internet access through Sailor

1995 - Carroll County Public Library became the first Internet service provider in Carroll County

1996: The Family Birthplace opens as one of the first units in the area to offer the Labor-Delivery-Recovery-Postpartum approach to childbirth.

1997: The Richard N. Dixon Ambulatory Care Center, the county's first full-service outpatient surgical facility, is completed.

Tindle served as administrator of CCMH until his retirement in September 1998.

The Partnership for a Healthier Carroll County, Inc. was chartered in 1999 as a unique not-for-profit organization devoted to building capacity to improve health and quality of life in our community.

2000 - 11,529 children and teens participated in CCPL's summer reading program

2001 - System-wide circulation exceeded 3 million items: 3,044,266

2002: Carroll County General Hospital becomes Carroll Hospital Center and marks the completion of an $80 million expansion.

2004 - Eldersburg renovations completed.

2007: Carroll Hospice opens Dove House, the county's first inpatient hospice facility.

The 2008 renovation to the branch included a 5,000 square foot expansion and interior improvements

2009 - Finksburg Branch opened on January 28

The 2010 renovation included the addition of a drive-up service window.

2011: As Carroll Hospital Center celebrates its 50th anniversary, a $1 million gift, the first $1 million donation from a board member, is pledged by Jack and Beth Tevis, of Westminster.

2012 - Systemwide circulation exceeded 4.4 million

2014: The $28 million William E. Kahlert Regional Cancer Center and the Tevis Center for Wellness open in October under one roof.

2020 - Construction begins on Exploration Commons at 50 East
