Carrols Restaurant Group company history timeline

1960

At that time, Herbert N. Slotnick was granted the exclusive Carrols license rights for the state of New York. It all began in 1960, when Carrols Systems was founded as a division of a larger Midwestern firm.

1971

Tooze remembered serving free food to State Police during the 1971 Attica Prison riots and helping raise money for the Batavia Marching Band.

1975

In the latter part of 1975, Carrols made a major decision concerning its future growth and direction.

Most Carrols restaurant locations were converted to Burger King franchises in 1975, with less profitable stores shuttered.

1983

"As a pioneer in the fast-food business in upstate New York, Carrols prospered as just about the only game in many towns," Mike Meyers wrote in a 1983 Democrat and Chronicle story. "When Carrols opened a restaurant in Buffalo in those early years, the city only had one McDonald's."

Profits were up, and the stock price quadrupled, Meyers reported in 1983.

1998

In 1998 it opened its first operation in Moscow located at the then-new Ohotni Riad Mall.

2010

"Hamburgers were 15 cents and milkshakes were 15 cents and French fries were a dime, so it was 40 cents for a meal," Slotnick said in a 2010 story published online by Syracuse.com.

2011

In February 2011 the company announced it was divesting itself of its two Central American-themed chains, Taco Cabana and Pollo Tropical, in a spin-off aimed at helping the company focus on its core Burger King operations.

2012

The sale of the two chains, collectively called the Fiesta Restaurant Group, was completed in May 2012.

In June 2012, Carrols acquired 278 Burger King locations from Burger King for approximately $150 million.

2019

On February 20th 2019, Nation's Restaurant News reported that Carrols is to merge with Cambridge Franchise Holdings LLC in a deal worth 238 million dollars, which adds 55 Popeyes and 166 Burger Kings to Carrols' portfolio.
