Carthage Area Hospital (CAH) was established as a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) rural community hospital in 1965.The facility is a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital that serves approximately 83,000 residents living in Jefferson, northern Lewis and southern St Lawrence Counties.
Since 1965, Carthage Area Hospital has been providing quality and reliable health care to patients from the greater Carthage area.
In May of 1966 it was announced that the hospital had admitted 1,114 patients in the first 10 months.
In 1968 the hospital administration applied for approval for a projected 20 bed addition.
With the opening of the new Carthage Area hospital the Sligar converted the hospital into a nursing home and operated it until building Greenbriar Nursing Home which opened in 1969.
The Carthage Area Hospital Foundation, a separate non-profit charitable corporation, was established in 1994 to promote and receive gifts to further continue excellence in community health care at Carthage Area Hospital.
In 1995, the Hospital completed a 6,000 square foot expansion / renovation of its Emergency Department (ED).
In 2013 they opened Meadowbrook Terrace, an assisted living facility.
