Casella Waste Systems company history timeline
Casella Waste Systems, Inc. and its predecessor companies were founded in 1975 as Casella's Refuse Removal in Rutland, Vermont.
The brothers, influenced not only by that unique spirit of New England frugality, could also see the future – and in 1977 built the company's first, and the state's first, recycling facility in Vermont.
In 1993 the brothers began an acquisition spree, bringing 50 companies under their company’s umbrella, creating an empire of four landfills, eight recycling processing facilities, and over 68,000 customers.
Revenue quintupled in four years and the company went public in 1997.
They took on even more debt in late 1999 to help fund the purchase of KTI, a New Jersey-based waste processor that had facilities in 21 states and in Canada.
Since 2000, the company has moved more aggressively to supplement traditional waste management services with its expertise in resource renewal and sustainability.
Over the same period, share prices of big-name competitors Waste Management and Republic Services have grown roughly 110% and 95%. John says they delivered on that three year plan a year early in 2017, when the company returned to pre-recession revenue.
