The DPO Backcaster partners closely with the Fuels Value Chain, VCO, and Operations Research to evaluate economic outcomes versus plan and potential, develop repeatable performance diagnostics, and build governance around value realization. The role blends commercial analytics, economic reasoning, and systems thinking to improve forecast accuracy, execution discipline, and organizational learning across the network. Key Responsibilities * Conducts structured backcasts comparing planned, actual, and economically achievable outcomes to identify performance gaps, value leakage, and systemic inefficiencies. Develops repeatable diagnostic frameworks to prioritize high‑impact improvements. * Partners with Fuels Value Chain and VCO teams to trace commercial outcomes to underlying decisions, constraints, and assumptions. Quantifies economic impacts of deviations from plan and provides objective, data‑driven analysis to improve decision quality. * Communicates backcast findings, economic narratives, and improvement recommendations to senior stakeholders in clear, decision‑oriented formats that drive actionable changes to tools, processes, or governance. * Applies understanding of refinery operations, logistics, and market dynamics to identify recurring performance patterns and refine planning assumptions, forecasts, and execution strategies over multi‑month horizons. * Identifies repeatable value opportunities through historical pattern analysis and partners with CI and regional teams to convert insights into executable improvement initiatives; tracks progress through value realization. * Enhances analytical tools, metrics, and dashboards to standardize backcasting and scale performance diagnostics. Documents frameworks, playbooks, and best practices to strengthen institutional knowledge. * Supports VCO strategy execution by providing data‑driven insights that shape business planning, optimization priorities, and integrated backcasting capabilities across the value chain. * Develops optimized and executable regional supply plans using existing economic and communication tools for work team. Identifies perceived constraints and limitations and seeks further understanding, challenging as appropriate. Coordinates with stakeholders to identify and evaluate economics to realize commercial opportunities. Gathers and develops supply/demand balances, including maintaining refinery and system available crude or products for scheduling and modeling inputs. Performs periodic plan-vs-actual and economically achievable (ideal) reviews to identify drivers of performance gaps and value leakage. Some positions may include use of advanced software such as distribution and/or blending models. * Collaborates and serves as liaison between multiple internal stakeholders including RVCO, Trading, Scheduling, and Marketing to understand business needs, identify constraints and opportunities, discuss local and regional economic drivers, and propose solutions. Collaborates closely with Traders to coordinate, evaluate, and present market opportunities. Aligns opportunities with refining system requirements in the 120-day plan. Identifies, quantifies, and clearly explains drivers of performance gaps and associated economic impacts. * Effectively communicates opportunities, plans, strategies, and performance insights to internal stakeholders using multiple platforms or mediums. Stakeholders are able to clearly understand messaging and performance implications. * Applies a solid understanding of refinery operations, economics, commodity logistics, and market dynamics across multiple refineries, with working knowledge of regional assets, competitors, and logistical flows. Prepares and communicates multi-month forecasts for inventory and purchase or sales volumes to optimize refining run plans and corporate profitability, while coordinating adjustments as conditions change. Conducts prompt-period reviews of demand fulfillment, inventory positioning, and distribution performance to identify improvement opportunities. * Identifies inefficiencies and substantial value opportunities. Sets goals associated with tool improvement, logistics data, strategic intelligence, and repeatable performance review methods. * Develops tools and metrics to track commercial performance within areas of responsibility and translate findings into actionable improvement opportunities. * Contributes to strategy execution and business development by identifying ideas and opportunities. Assists with project financial analysis and supports the creation of the annual business plan. Education and Experience * Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field preferred. * Seven (7) years of experience in Refining, Commercial, Logistics, or other related experience required. Controlling nonconforming products Supporting implementation of corrective/preventive and improvement actions Train new hires as needed. Set up, shut down, monitor and control machine operations and change or correct settings to keep operations within specifications.
