About the Role:
The Machinist will set up and operate OD/ID gear grinding machines to correct R/O, perpendicularity, parallelism, concentricity on shafts, splines, and gears (spur, helical, and double helical).
What You Will Do:
Follow specific instructions to set up and operate OD/ID grinding machines and to operate associated wheel dress and balancing equipment (60% of job)
Use a variety of hand tools, gauges and dial indicators to install involute cams, yokes, arbors, work piece, etc.
Use optical equipment to present wheel dresser tools; balance and dress wheels as required, indicate work piece between bench centers prior to loading grinder and make any other adjustments and/or calculations necessary to meet quality standards (20% of job)
Check and monitor machine operations, check finished part prior to unloading and obtain any required dimensional verification.
Visually check parts for finish, and for indications of surface burn or tempering (10-15% of job)
Maintain records of all finish dimensions and obtain inspection acceptance of finished part
Perform other related work of a comparable or lower skill level as related to gear machining and check work of other operators as required
Perform operator checklist as required and comply with all EH&S procedures
As required segregate waste material and follow good housekeeping practices
May be assigned to carry out tasks, not specifically listed, within the scope and skill level of this job description in support of department objectives and to develop individuals' skills
What You Have:
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
Make calculations involving shop mathematics and handbook formulas including algebra and trigonometry
Use precision instruments such as dial indicators, micrometers, height gages, snap gages, ring gages and gear measuring wires
Equivalent to 2 years high school plus 2 to 3 years trades training
Experience 1 to 2 years
Preferred Candidates will have the following:

This position description is for **Level 4 CNC Machinist** within the Large Power Systems Division located in our Lafayette, IN facility.
Candidates must have a strong background with experience in boring milling, drilling and reaming. Must have knowledge of CNC programs and be able to make offset adjustments as required.
**Actual shift availability varies week by week and successful candidates will be started as soon as a position becomes available on their requested shift. Please note that this could mean a sizable waiting period before starting.**
**Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:**
+ Responsible for production, quality, housekeeping and other related duties associated with the operation and set up of CNC and NC controlled machines, transport material, audit, operate wash tanks and operate some manual operations.
+ Interpret CNC programs Job Instruction Sheet, CMM data, Gageit (gage tracking) and accountable for processes by monitoring Infinity.
+ At times may be required to work overtime to support the manufacturing requirements.
+ Must have the ability to trouble shoot and solve problems dealing with machine, tooling, and program malfunction and solve everyday problems.
+ Must be able to manage time and work well in a team environment.
**Basic Qualifications:**
+ Two or more years of experience in a manufacturing environment: multi-axis CNC machining experience, ability to program CNC machines with Fanuc, Siemens or other controllers.
+ Strong working knowledge of machining principles; basic SPC, blueprint reading; understanding of geometric tolerances; ability to interpret CMM reports; quality data; and work experience in a lean manufacturing environment.
+ Must pass CNC skills assessment in order to win position
+ Required to stay in section for 12 months except for a promotion or nights to days move
**Physical Requirements:**
+ Candidates for all positions must have the ability to work in a fast pace, medium to heavy duty assembly, technical environment.
+ Work may involve frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling, twisting, turning, climbing, and standing on concrete for 8+ hours.
+ All positions also require the ability to lift **_40 pounds_** and withstand frequent repetitive movement of hands with a variety of tooling.

Responsibilities
The Advanced CNC Manufacturing Instructor will develop and instruct lab and lecture classes and develop student learning outcomes and course descriptions. This includes organizing instruction towards achieving student learning objectives; selecting textbooks and another curriculum; conferring with students; evaluating student mastery and providing a safe and positive classroom and laboratory environment.

Set up, operate, and fine-tune CNC machines to manufacture precision components (metal + plastic)
Run multi-axis programs for milling, drilling, threading, reaming, and profiling

+ Operate manual and CNC machines (milling, turning, drilling, grinding,EDM , Swiss, 5-axis milling, complex lathes with live tooling and state of the art 5 axis waterjet).
+ Set up and troubleshoot CNC programs using G-code; adjust tool and part offsets. Troubleshoot equipment.
+ Perform all levels of classic manual machining and metrology using calipers, micrometers, gauge blocks, and microscopes. Perform all levels of maintenance on all the machines and equipment in the facility.
**Design & Programming**
+ Create and interpret detailed engineering drawings, including GD&T standards.
+ Documented training in GD&T standards
+ UseCAD /CAM software (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, MasterCAM, AutoCAD PowerMill) for design and manufacturing programs.
+ Program and operate coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and 3D scanners.

Shift: Working hours will be determined by work load and shift coverage needs. Typically, Day Shift starts at 5:00AM and ends between 1:30PM and 5:00PM;
Night Shift will start between 3:30PM and 5:00PM and will end between 12:00AM and 5:00AM.
In this role you will be accountable for:
* Observe Company Safety Policy and Procedures; follow and support all Safety Policies and ISO Procedures
* Capable of operating all machines in the shop (including large mills, lathes, stripping machine, peening machine, tool post grinders, and other equipment)
* Operating a machine consists of:
* Able to lift large, heavy equipment using the crane or spreader bar setup when required
* Operate manual and automatic feeds to 0.0002" as required for final cuts
* Operate machine to make complex angle cuts and threading where multiple speeds and feeds are required
* Complete all documentation pertaining to the work assignment
* Work closely and clearly communicate with the other departments, Machine personnel, Supervisor, and Leads
* Complete assigned jobs start to finish with little or no supervision. This includes the ability to perform the following:
* Perform intermediate trigonometry to help determine tooling required to machine the part and best matching method
* Read blue prints, drawings and sketches that may be required intermediate math and problems solving skills to calculate dimensions note specified on print
* Help maintain equipment, this includes the following:
* Check / Add oil
* Clean machine after each shift
* Place tooling in correct location and organize
* Dispose of and properly document left over machining stock (New Parts, Met Samples)
* Q.C. all manufactured parts prior to removing from machine and informing the Department Supervisor of the following items:
* When/If item is deburred
* Once dimensions are verified per print
* Alert Supervisor if there are any discrepancies

ABOUT THE POSITION
The Machinist (CNC/Manual) position programs and operates one or more CNC machining center to perform drilling, tapping, milling, boring and other machining operations over a range of surfaces, diameters, and depths. Determines operation sequence, select, and adjust tools and mount in storage matrix. Job set ups may be complex and require milling to very close tolerances.
Key Deliverables
* Study blueprints, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece
* Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
* Inspect finished workpiece(s) to blueprints, quality standards, exact tolerances, using measuring and inspection tools as necessary.
* Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data to process steel (some pieces weighing as much as 300 lbs.)
* Consults with engineers, production management, programmers, or others to resolve machining or programming problems.
Key Activities & Responsibilities
* Operates alternately more than one type of machine tool such as grinders, drill presses, lathes, etc. on machining operations of moderate complexity.
* Reads job specifications to determine machine adjustments and material requirements.
* Performs correct machine adjustments and obtains correct materials.
* Set up and lay out to print specifications.
* Observes machine operation to detect work piece defects or machine malfunction.
* Measures work piece dimensions to determine accuracy of machine operation.
* Removes burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from work piece.

Shop manufacturing environment exposures include exposure to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools and equipment, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding and machining operations, outside weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electric shock. The Machinist (CNC/Manual) position programs and operates one or more CNC machining center to perform drilling, tapping, milling, boring and other machining operations over a range of surfaces, diameters, and depths. Determines operation sequence, select, and adjust tools and mount in storage matrix. Job set ups may be complex and require milling to very close tolerances.
Key Deliverables
· Study blueprints, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece
· Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
· Inspect finished workpiece(s) to blueprints, quality standards, exact tolerances, using measuring and inspection tools as necessary.
· Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data to process steel (some pieces weighing as much as 300 lbs.)
· Consults with engineers, production management, programmers, or others to resolve machining or programming problems.
Key Activities & Responsibilities
· Operates alternately more than one type of machine tool such as grinders, drill presses, lathes, etc. on machining operations of moderate complexity.
· Reads job specifications to determine machine adjustments and material requirements.
· Performs correct machine adjustments and obtains correct materials.
· Set up and lay out to print specifications.
· Observes machine operation to detect work piece defects or machine malfunction.
· Measures work piece dimensions to determine accuracy of machine operation.
· Removes burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from work piece.
· Adjust stops and replace dull tools.
· Performs minor machine maintenance such as oiling machines, dies, or work pieces.
· Stack, mark, pack, and transport finished work pieces.
· Completes related paperwork necessary to maintain accurate manufacturing records.
· Maintains and uses all appropriate PPE
· Uses material handling equipment when required
· Actively participate in accident prevention and adhere to all safety requirements
To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:
· High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and formal technical training credits in recognized college level- program.
· Preferred Mazak experience.
· 0-2 years with heavy equipment production line CNC/Manual machining.
· Maintain positive, cooperative working relationships by working, acting, and communicating with various personalities getting along with customers, vendors, co-workers, and management working both individually and as part of a team.
· Skill in working efficiently and accurately to keep up with production requirements.
· Safe material handling skills in working with steel.
· Capacity to learn quickly, parts machined are unique to manufactured equipment and change orders are frequent.

Manufacturing Environment
Shop manufacturing environment exposures include exposure to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools and equipment, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding and machining operations, outside weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electric shock. The employee may occasionally be exposed to varying levels of dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, very warm and/or very chilly temperatures. The noise level in the shop can be very loud at times consistent with an industrial assembly facility and may require hearing protection. The Faculty of Rapid Prototype Machinist provides classroom, laboratory, and related instruction under the supervision of the Department Chair and is responsible for planning and providing student instruction in accordance with approved syllabi, curriculum guidelines, and required program standards.
Salary range is $52,274-62,274 depending on education and experience; faculty are offered 12-month contracts for 166 workdays between August-May.
This is a grant-funded position that has no guarantee of employment beyond the duration of the grant.

* Teaches courses as assigned within faculty workload guidelines.
