Catholic Charities of LA history

Incorporated in 1938, Associated Catholic Charities was established to help coordinate the numerous agencies serving the poor and vulnerable of the Archdiocese.

More than 25 years later, in 1947, the NCCC established the Standing Committee of Religious to bring more religious into the leadership of the NCCC.

AYE has operated federally funded job training programs since 1965 when it was asked by the United States Department of Labor to participate in the War on Poverty.

1973Catholic Charities of Acadiana began initially by providing limited services of rent and utility assistance to needy individuals and families in 1973.

In 1985, the Catholic Welfare Bureau was renamed Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc.

Incorporated in 1986 as Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc., the agency functioned as the social service arm of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which is a religious organization.

1987Housing and shelter programs began in 1987 with the opening of St Joseph Emergency Shelter for Men.

1995In 1995, a partnership with Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center was formed to offer free healthcare to the uninsured, poor and homeless on the Lafayette campus through the St Bernadette Clinic.

In 1996, the agency became known as Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans (CCANO).

In 2009, the medical clinic expanded its services to include a free dental clinic.

2018Catholic Charities of Acadiana was incorporated in 2018 within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette by Bishop Douglas Deshotel.
