Moulinier was instructed to conduct a retreat for the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet at St Joseph's Academy in St Paul, MN, during the summer of 1914, the story began to unfold.

The first CHA convention in late June 1915 had 200 attendees—sisters, lay nurses, and lay doctors, representing 43 hospitals from 12 states.

Mother Esperance was elected as second vice president of CHA in 1916 at the second annual convention.

In 1917, she was named the first superior of Trinity Hospital, Jamestown, ND, transforming the institution from a private hospital into a Catholic one.

Catholic healthcare in Orange County began in 1922 when the Sisters of Saint Joseph moved their motherhouse from Northern California to Santa Ana with the intention of starting a school.

They eventually founded Saint Joseph Hospital in Orange in 1929.

By 1949, St Francis Hospital was the largest hospital in the United States dedicated to pediatric cardiac care and today is one of the nation’s leading cardiac centers.

They later purchased Fullerton General Hospital, which they renovated and reopened as St Jude’s Hospital in 1957.

Not until 1970 would CHA have a woman religious as its chief executive officer when the board of trustees appointed Sr.

Catholic Health was founded in 1997 by the Diocese of Rockville Centre and encompasses facilities and services that originated as charitable institutions under the sponsorship of religious sponsors.

Monday, July 19, 2004, marks the 90th anniversary of a gathering at which Catholic health ministry leaders came together to respond to technological advances that were changing health care delivery in the United States.

In 2012, Catholic Health launched the Catholic Health Physician Hospital Organization (PHO), in conjunction with LIHN. Under the leadership of and guided by doctors, the Catholic Health PHO will further deliver clinically excellent and value-based medical services to patients.

In July 2016 they merged with Providence Health & Services to become Providence St Joseph Health, the third-largest Catholic healthcare system in the United States.

The hospital is one of 101 programs nationwide to have received the designation since the program’s launch in 2017.
