Cattlemans Restaurant history

By 1926, Stockyards City was the home of two major meat processors and the area became known as "Packing Town." It was in 1926 that H.V. 'Homer" Paul took over Cattlemen's, already a well-known establishment among the area's thousands of workers.

During Prohibition, it was known for its home-brewed 'liquid delights.'In 1945, Cattlemen's was owned by Hank Frey, a gambler of sorts.

Company founder Markus Rohtbart was a survivor of Auschwitz who had immigrated to the United States from Poland with his family in 1948.

In 1968 they opened the first Cattlemens and brought their rancher’s straightforwardness to the restaurant business.

The cornerstone for our first building here, now the “Cantina” party facility, was laid in April of 1969.

Cattleman's was established in 1972 as the Eastern Market Beef Processing Corp.

In 1987, at the urging of his son, David Rohtbart, Markus agreed to enter the retail business.

To finance the development of its new retail operations in the Eastern Market location, in 1988 the company merged with Arrow Point Resources, an inactive public corporation located in Utah and later moved to Delaware.

In June 1991 the company changed its name to Cattleman's, Inc., and opened its first outlet store in Eastern Market.

The former Oak Farms retail locations were remodeled and renamed Cattleman's Markets, and by December 1994 the company had five retail locations in operation around the city.

Among other changes, the decision was made to add the "Farmers' Market" name to each of the Cattleman's retail outlets in 1995.
