System Development Engineer, Platform Engineering & Emerging Technology (PEET)
Amazon 4.7
San Francisco, CA jobs
The Platform Engineering & Emerging Technology (PEET) Amazon Dedicated Cloud team is hiring for a System Development Engineer to support CloudTrail, AWS Config, and other AWS services! You'll design, deploy, monitor, and automate infrastructure, tools, and systems to provide a highly‑available and resilient platform for our customers' and our team's workloads.
Would you like to implement innovative cloud computing solutions and solve the world's most complex technical problems? Do you have a deep passion and desire to engineer and operate the world's largest cloud computing infrastructure to build a better world for future generations?
This is an exciting opportunity to use the latest cloud computing technologies to help U.S. Government agencies implement innovative cloud computing solutions and solve technical problems. AWS established a specialized group of service teams responsible for the work we are doing with the U.S. Intelligence Community. We are building some of the largest and most complex distributed systems in the world, and we need adaptable people to help us implement and operate them.
The PEET team supports the operations of the CloudTrail, AWS Config, and other AWS services in ADC regions and builds the services in new ADC regions and features. This specific role will also support our development team, which creates solutions to solve ADC builder and customer pain points. We are seeking a talented engineer skilled in the art of integration who understands the Agile mindset and DevOps philosophies, yet is not constrained by how “things are usually done” and is willing to decompose and reinvent systems, processes, and tools. We're looking for an experienced builder to solve problems for some of the largest compliance and governance services on the planet; if you possess that rare mix of depth in Operations, Networking, and Systems Engineering then we are waiting for your application.
This position requires that the candidate selected must currently possess and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph. The position further requires the candidate to opt into a commensurate clearance for each government agency for which they perform AWS work.
Key Responsibilities
Design, deploy, monitor, and automate infrastructure, tools, and systems to provide a highly‑available and resilient platform for our customers' and our team's workloads.
Perform on‑call responsibilities, typically one week in every eight. Work to ensure that systems are fault tolerant and resolve root causes to prevent repeated paging.
A Day in the Life
You'll roughly spend 50 % of your time operating production systems and 50 % making long‑term improvements to the reliability, availability, and performance of those software systems. An example week could look like: Monday morning you root‑cause why some deployments recently failed, and in the afternoon you fixed those bugs. Tuesday you realized there's a common thread to those bug fixes yesterday, and designed a solution to that class of problem; you sought feedback from your team. Wednesday you investigated a Service Level Objective (SLO) that recently became less useful, dug deep and updated the threshold and infrastructure as code to fix it. Thursday and Friday you continued the design and prototype for a new solution you pitched to automate dependency analysis and testing in region.
Basic Qualifications
2 + years of non‑internship professional software development experience.
1 + years of designing or architecting design patterns, reliability, and scaling of new and existing systems.
3 + years of administrative experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands‑on systems engineering.
Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, or Ruby.
Current, active US Government Security Clearance of TS/SCI with Polygraph.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience automating, deploying, and supporting large‑scale infrastructure.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, build processes.
Amazon is an equal‑opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.
Compensation ranges from $116,300 to $201,200 per year, depending on location and experience. Base pay is complemented by equity, sign‑on payments, and benefits.
