Job Summary
The Cell Biologist I for our Large-Scale Tissue Culture group offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment and to perform experiments designed to increase yield within the production platform. This position offers a varied work load and will enable you to gain solid experience that will allow you to grow and increase your skill set within a fast-growing and stable biotech company. This position will also allow you to gain experience in all areas of tissue culture and cross training on a variety of other supporting tasks such as downstream processing, ELISA assays, qPCR, mycoplasma detection, and NOVA BioProfile 400 use and maintenance.
The primary functions of this position include culturing, setting up, feeding, maintaining, and harvesting of bioreactors with hybridoma cells, finding, testing, and developing new procedures to increase the quality and efficiency of our product and processes, and maintenance of regularly used equipment.

Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience
Associate's Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or related area OR a Biotech CertificateFamiliarity with aseptic technique6 months of related experience Some holiday and weekend work will be required

**Description:**

Regularly leads several process science teams or is the SME on two or more process science functional areas. Regularly acts as the process science representative on several project team. Manages a large group of scientists, engineers, senior scientists, senior engineers, engineers and managers Frequently solves unprecedented complex scientific problems based on experience and fundamental scientific and engineering knowledge. Has significant discretion in day to day and week to week operation of groups or teams, in alignment with Process Science's long term objectives Serves as a Process Science spokesperson to the FDA or other regulatory agencies, to VPs in BI, and to high level customers.

This position will be responsible for leading a Process Science development lab, which includes developing scaleable processes, transferring processes into GMP manufacturing, and acting as a principal investigator for multiple projects. This position will manage a highly technical team of scientists and interfaces with both internal and external customers. This position will develop and administer budgets, schedules, and goals and translate business plans from the Director, Process Science to objectives for job functions in the lab supporting upstream activities, tech transfer and scale up. This position will be accountable to drive technical innovation into upstream processes and be a primary interface with BI Contract Manufacturing Business clients.

**Duties & Responsibilities:**

+ Develop scalable processes (such as mammalian cell culture and harvest processes, purification processes)

+ Lead technology development programs in one Process Science lab (cell culture, protein science) in alignment with budget. Propose new technologies for further development.

+ Provide leadership and management to a group of scientists and engineers. Ensure worker safety including training, supervision and control of safety guidelines.

+ Identify, propose, and execute process and procedural changes to improve process performance, robustness, productivity and efficiency.

+ Keep up to date with external patent and literature environment; pursue active presentation/publishing and patenting strategies.

+ Collaborate within department and cross-functionally to meet set objectives.

+ Facilitate/lead technology transfers from CMO customers and participate in the customer interface as required. Organize scientific presentations for internal discussion and as needed to inform both internal and external customers.

**Requirements:**

+ Doctoral degree and/or Masters' degree and or Bachelors' degree with eleven plus (11+) years' experience with a focus in Biochemistry, Biopharmaceuticals or Biology.

+ Four (4) to six (6) years' experience leading employees and projects.

+ At least ten plus (10+) years of MS industry experience, thorough knowledge of biotechnology process development methodologies.

+ Thorough knowledge of GMP biotechnology manufacturing.

+ Previous experience in successfully managing scientific and engineering function

+ Proven skills building and maintaining productive relationships with organizational partners such as manufacturing and quality

+ Ability to lead effectively in a matrixed organization

+ Excellent communication and management skills

+ Understanding of validation of biopharmaceutical facilities, equipment and process

**OBJECTIVE** :

Under this task order, the contractor will independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute on Aging - Center for Alzheimer's and Related Dementias

(CARD). The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services. Provides technical experience needed to assist Cell Culture platform and work with staff to characterize genetic pathways for Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD) using human cell-based models.

**TASKS** :

Provides technical experience needed to assist in studying the basic principles of plant and animal life

Work with staff on performing various experiments and procedures related to differentiation and phenotyping of induced pluripotent stem cell iPSC lines, including longitudinal and automated imaging of CNS-differentiated cells

Evaluate the stability of iPSC and iPSC-derived cells across lines and passages to identify cell lines with desirable characteristics for subsequent cell engineering.

Work with staff to apply published protocols for cell differentiation to IPSC lines, microscopy, and molecular analysis.

Work independently in designing, developing, and performing new methods

Work with staff to provide insight into the effects of ADRD-associated mutations on molecular readouts in cell culture.

Support other research projects

Collect, Analyze, interpret, and organize data and present results in team and departmental meetings

Keep detailed, organized, and accurate digital and physical experimental records

Update and maintain laboratory notebooks and databases.

Attend meetings and present results and findings for staff discussion.

Work with staff to characterize genetic pathways for Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD) using human cell-based models

Assists with performing basic laboratory experiments and procedures

Collaborate with other team members to carry out small and large-scale of iPSC cell culture experiments

Perform standard immunological techniques, including western blotting and immunostaining

Prepares, organizes and maintains various lab samples, supplies, and equipment

Train staff on the proper usage of laboratory instruments and equipment.

Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot instruments and equipment in the laboratory.

Maintain and perform staff training on scientific instrumentation, cell culture microscopies, microanalytical balances, centrifuges.

Operate, troubleshoot, and train others to use laboratory equipment and software.

Provide advice and assistance to users in designing experiments, using instrumentation, data acquisition and analysis, and preparing figures for publication.

Assist scientific equipment and resources including reagents, stocks of frozen sells, animal samples including acquisition, documentation, and storage.

Learns new laboratory techniques and procedures

Optimize and perform iPSC culture and CNS cell differentiation of isogenic iPSC lines

Develop new differentiation protocols for iPSC lines to differentiate into disease-relevant cell types like neurons, astrocytes, and microglia

Develop image analysis routines to analyze the effects of disease-associated mutations on cellular phenotypes

Willing to learn automated cell culture

Mentors junior level scientists.

Train staff on the proper usage of equipment

Provide scientific and technical expertise to all visiting fellows, post-docs, and technicians internal and external.

Support other research projects
