1870

1870 Belgian chemist Edmund J. DeSmedt laid the first true asphalt pavement in the United States in Newark, N.J. DeSmedt also paved Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. – using 54,000 square yards of sheet asphalt from Trinidad Lake.

1871

The Cummer Company opened the first central hot mix production facilities in the United States The first asphalt patent was filed by Nathan B. Abbott of Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1871.

1907

1907 Production of refined petroleum asphalt outstripped the use of natural asphalt.

1921

In 1921, Charles J. Shelly, fresh out of high school, went to work in the construction industry.

1925

1925: THE COMPANY WAS FOUNDED

The Fisher Companies began as Fisher Sand and Gravel in 1925, within the City of Midland, Michigan.

1938

After several years learning the business and its contracting practices, he started his own company in 1938.

1942

1942 During World War II, asphalt technology greatly improved, spurred by the need of military aircraft for surfaces that could stand up to heavier loads.

1947

Fisher Sand and Gravel was moved to this location in 1947.

1955

1955 - CENTRAL CONCRETE PRODUCTS IS FOUNDED

1956

1956 Congress passed the Interstate Highways Act, allotting $51 billion to the states for road construction.

1957

1957 - FISHER CONTRACTING IS FOUNDED

1958

In 1958, Harry J. Suits, Sr. passed away leaving behind a tremendous legacy and a successful business enterprise to his two sons, Harry “Bud” Suits, Jr. and Frank H. Suits, Sr.

1961

The company continued its managed growth and in 1961 Frank Suits, Sr. decided to move to Cortland, NY to create a new asphalt business named Cortland Asphalt Products.

1963

By 1963, The Shelly Company had become an established contractor and asphalt producer in the Central Ohio area.

1970

1970 - FISHER TRANSPORTATION IS FOUNDED

1980

In 1980, all of the Suits family interests were consolidated under one name, thus Suit-Kote Corporation was born.

During the 1980′s, an asphalt division was also created; again to complement the already existing divisions.

1982

1982 - CENTRAL ASPHALT IS FOUNDED

1983

1983 - BAY AGGREGATES IS FOUNDED

1984

1984 - MIDLAND ENGINE IS FOUNDED

1985

The company’s footprint continued to expand, and by 1985, 24 subsidiary companies had merged under the Shelly umbrella.

1986

1986 National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) at Auburn University, Alabama established, providing a centralized, systematic approach to asphalt research.

1992

Suit-Kote has always placed a tremendous amount of importance on product quality and development, thus, it was a natural fit when Suit-Kote acquired McConnaughay Technologies in 1992.

1993

In 1993, Frank Suits, Jr. became President of Suit-Kote Corporation.

2000

2000 - BUCKS RUN GOLF CLUB OPENS

In 2000, Oldcastle, Inc., a CRH plc company headquartered in Atlanta, acquired The Shelly Company.

2002

2002 The EPA announced that asphalt plants are no longer on its list of industries considered major sources of hazardous air pollutants.

2012

2012 - PORT FISHER TERMINALS IS FOUNDED

2015

2015 - FISHER CONSTRUCTION AGGREGATES IS FOUNDED

In 2015, an aggregate mining division was also added; again, to complement the already existing divisions.
