In 1996, Michael F. Neidorff joined the company as chief executive.
1997: The company is renamed Centene Corporation, and its corporate office is established in St Louis, Missouri.
On January 6, 1999, Envolve Pharmacy Solutions (formerly US Script) was formed to meet the demand for responsive pharmacy benefit management services that would proactively address client concerns and be flexible enough to meet future needs.

In the United Kingdom, Centene began to acquire local healthcare services in 2017.

In 2018, it acquired MHM Services, including its stake in Centurion.
In March 2019, it announced plans to acquire WellCare for US$17.3 billion.

In 2019, Centene, through its subsidiary MH Services, took a 40% stake in Circle Health, as part of a deal which created a national network of over 50 private hospitals.
2020: Combines with WellCare to create a premier healthcare enterprise serving more than 23 million members across all 50 states in the United States
On January 4, 2021, it was announced that it would acquire Magellan Health for $2.2 billion.
On January 4, 2022, the acquisition was completed.
