This internship is open to current college students who are eligible to receive academic credit. They will work with our Case Managers to individually guide guests to develop a customized case plan. This puts the guest on a trajectory which leads them out of homelessness using evidenced-based, strengths-based case management. Working at a rescue mission with diverse and vulnerable populations teaches highly transferable soft skills, provides exposure to complex social issues impacting society, and builds cultural competence to work with a variety of people that will benefit you in any field. Duties/Responsibilities: Meet weekly with a caseload of 5-10 guests with the assigned Case Manager. Meet weekly with the Assistant Administrator for mentorship and learning. Help ensure a chapel service occurs at 11:30am. This may include performing the chapel service himself. Perform hourly rounds to ensure that the building is safe and secure. Report relevant information pertaining to the daily shift log. Contact emergency personnel (EMS and/or law enforcement) when appropriate. Ensure the center facility is cleaned and supplies are stocked. Model Biblical Hospitality during the day-to-day functions of the center. Assist in the entry process as needed. This includes, but is not limited to: looking up information on guests, searching belongings and bags for contraband, wanding for weapons, informing guests of their assigned entry time, etc. Spend the semester working on and then presenting a project to the Men's Ministry team that will help improve on current best practices of the Men's Center. This position is responsible for assisting with the needs of homeless, runaway, foster, and at-risk youth and connecting them with resources, crisis intervention, referral information, life skills instruction, and tangible goods to provide for their basic needs. Your Impact and Key Responsibilities * Crisis intervention services to at-risk, runaway, and homeless youth on the streets and on-site, including youth who are involved in the Foster Care system. * Assist with structured life skills classes in the Drop-in Center during the day and on Wednesday evenings. * Assist with any paperwork required for in-person classes, such as life skills certificates, attendance sheets, etc. * Assist with the development of new curriculum and/or facilitate group life skills instruction under the supervision of trained instructors. * Complete required client intake and enrollment documentation. * Conduct street outreach with experienced staff in the community to locate homeless and at-risk youth in need of services. * Assist with the planning and supervision of special youth activities and events on-site and out in the community. * Participate in outreach events and community presentations as needed. Qualifications What You Will Need * Undergraduate student majoring in psychology, criminal justice, sociology, education or related field Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Knowledge of St. Louis neighborhoods and understanding of the dynamics of street youth preferred. * Experience working with runaway, homeless, foster care, and street youth and/or youth who have emotional and behavioral issues preferred. * Organizational skills and experience with group facilitation and presentations preferred. * The physical requirements of this job include sitting, standing, walking, and climbing stairs on a regular basis, lifting up to 100lbs, pulling and/or pushing on occasion. The Intern, under the collaborative academic-employer partnership, performs specific student nursing tasks to meet clinical objectives in delivering patient care directed and supervised by a designated Registered Nurse preceptor. The Family Support Network (FSN) Administrative Intern will be provided with a comprehensive overview of programmatic processes in the family therapy program at Epworth, including but not limited to social work, clinical social work (not direct practice), and administrative/nonprofit management. The Administrative Intern will have weekly supervision with an FSN therapist/management staff who will be a trained Field Instructor through the St. Louis Field Instruction Collaborative. Experiential training for the Administrative Intern will be a combination of Epworth orientation, on-the-job onboarding with FSN Management Staff, and shadowing opportunities with FSN family therapists and Management Staff. Learning Objective #1: Student will have a broad overview of programmatic processes in a non-profit social work agency. 1. Student will meet with Director of Family Services to learn program goals, models, procedures, and outcomes. 2. Student will attend FSN and Epworth meetings to understand all aspects of a non-profit agency, including but not limited to financial/budget, continuous quality improvement, grant writing, staff development, and program implementation. 3. Student will learn supervision skills and non-profit management techniques to apply in professional social work practice. Learning Objective #2: Student will learn techniques to market program and will outreach to community partners and agencies. 1. Student will attend Outreach Meetings with FSN staff to assess and support marketing needs. 2. Student will contact community/partner agencies to strengthen referrals to program. 3. Student will respond to program inquiries. 4. Student will participate in outreach events and community presentations when available. Learning Objective #3: Student will gain proficiency at leveraging client database to input and gather client and staff performance information. 1. Student will track intake and referral information, including entering FSN Intakes into database and spreadsheets. 2. Student will assist FSN Management team with tracking and analyzing outcome and output data of closed cases. 4. Student will research, analyze, and refine key program metrics and outcomes. Student will research and share best practices that support development of new programming initiatives. * Desired Majors: BSW or MSW * FSN prefers students to have a year working with children under age 13 in any capacity, some experience in home visiting, and are focusing their studies on Children and Families and/or Mental Health/Clinical Social Work. * Desired Class Level(s): Senior BSW or MSW Foundation or Concentration program. * Compensation: Unpaid - for class credit; must be enrolled in a post-secondary degree program * Time Commitment: At least 2 semesters, 15-20 hours each week. * Availability: Daytimes; availability on Monday mornings is preferred due to FSN meetings, but not required. * Evaluation: Evaluation of student learning and progress will occur regularly via 1:1 sessions throughout the internship experience. The Student Trainee will represent the agency professionally and serve as a positive role model for clients. They will gain insight into the functions of different roles within the organization through job shadowing and hands-on experience.
