CARTI company history timeline

1989

The first four floors of the Walker Tower opened in 1989, with half the space dedicated to research and half to patient care.

1994

The Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute was founded in 1994 and houses the Department of Ophthalmology and the Pat & Willard Walker Eye Research Center.

1996

1996 Cancer Institute adds four floors to Walker Tower

2000

Doctor Ward was succeeded as chancellor by Doctor I. Dodd Wilson in 2000.

2007

A national search brought director Peter D. Emanuel, M.D. to the Cancer Institute in July 2007, the same year that the institute’s name was changed to honor the late Arkansas Lt.

2009

In early 2009, UAMS opened a new hospital, a 540,000-square-foot facility with 234 adult beds (since expanded to 346 adult beds) and 64 neonatal beds.

2012

UAMS also opened a west Little Rock clinic in 2012 that includes a sleep lab.

2019

In late 2019, internationally recognized medical oncologist Michael Birrer, M.D., Ph.D., was named vice chancellor and director of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.
