As a Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for specific laboratory specimens, orders, and information disposition. You will be performing and demonstrating an understanding of laboratory testing as well as technical and procedural problem solving. Working closely with our collaborative team, you will perform specimen investigation procedures to resolve lab specimen issues or problems. Your primary duties will include:
- Organizing, prioritizing and coordinating receipt and delivery of lab specimens.
- Performing laboratory testing while following correct policies.
- Performing cleanliness and preventative maintenance on instruments and equipment.
- Properly preparing specimens for analysis, transport and distribution.

Responsibilities:
Coordinates prioritization, receipt and delivery of laboratory specimens. Verifies accurate documentation relative to specimen processing. Accepts or rejects specimens according to established standards and performs specimen investigation procedures to resolve lab specimen issues or problems. Prepares specimens for analysis; aliquots, transports and distributes specimens. Maintains tracking information for specimens. Maintains instrumentation and equipment along with its cleanliness. Performs preventive maintenance and record keeping procedures. Maintains appropriate workstation supplies and inventory. Maintains patient, specimen and tracking data using laboratory computer system. Other duties as assigned.
Education:
Associate's Degree or equivalent. Three years of progressive lab experience may substitute for required education.
Certifications:
None required.
Complexity of Work:
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Work Experience:
Minimum one year experience in similar role. Bachelor's degree in a laboratory-based major may substitute for 1 year of lab work experience.
Physical Requirements:
Typical physical demands include visual acuity and the ability to distinguish colors; manual dexterity to handle specimens and repair equipment; may require extended periods of sitting, standing and walking.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

**What will you be doing in this role?**

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist I (CLS I) in the Core Laboratory is an entry level position that functions under the direction of senior technical personnel. Responsibilities include performing routine laboratory tests and may include some technically complex assays. Performing molecular techniques including DNA/RNA extraction, Real-time PCR, Capillary Electrophoresis, Virus testing and Next Generation Sequencing. Responsibilities include performing routine and technically complex laboratory tests and analyses requiring well developed cognitive, manipulative, and problem-solving skills. Operating and maintaining test equipment, monitoring, and evaluating the quality of testing, and verifying and reporting test results. Additional duties include general support functions necessary for the routine operation of the laboratory.

**Educational Requirements:**

+ Baccalaureate degree in a Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related science.

**License/Certification/Registration Requirements:**

+ Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the State of California.

**Experience:**

+ Zero to two years recent experience in molecular diagnostics and techniques, and/or related molecular data analysis preferred.

+ One-year experience in relevant field preferred.

The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for accurate and timely processing, testing and resulting. Responsibilities

* Maintains technical and computer skills required in the laboratory; May include phlebotomy, specimen collection, processing, reporting, and storage. May coordinate couriers for transport of specimens and supplies.
* Demonstrates knowledge of and upholds applicable laws and regulations related to position. Maintains knowledge of techniques, procedures, and protocols, lab-wide and within lab section. Reviews and acknowledges procedures as required. Assists with procedure and technical development and acts as a resource.

* Responsible for presenting continuing education. Participates in special projects and presentation of results. Assists with development and monitoring of specific competencies. Required to complete at least four hours of medical/technical continuing education, yearly.
* Demonstrates the initiative and ability to provide feedback that is useful and assists in individual improvement. Assist with training of new employees, students, fellows, rotators, etc. Promotes a cohesive work environment and identify resolutions to improve moral.
* Demonstrates the ability to make determinations regarding course of action and alternatives by addressing problems by using resolutions and basic troubleshooting skills. Able to resolve technical, computer, and customer service problems with in the lab section. Performs in-depth problem solving.
* Assumes responsibilities of Shift Coordinator/Site Lead as assigned.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

* Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science; or a chemical, physical or biological science from an accredited institution. Prefer American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certified. As of June 1, 2015: If not certified, must be eligible for certification as a Technologist by an approved agency. Certification exam must be completed within 3 years of hire date.
* Organizational skills, attention to detail, and computer experience. 3. Able to present information through oral or written communication effectively.
* Maintain and foster interpersonal relationships with internal and external customers.
* Demonstrates the ability to work efficiently and independently promoting a team environment and maintaining a cooperative and supportive atmosphere. When personal workload is light, helps others to stay productive.
* Demonstrates the ability to adjust to change, handle interruptions and function with changing circumstances.
* Demonstrate the ability to change manner of communication styles to adapt to various cultural differences.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

* Ability to stand for more than 1 hour at a time, sit for more than 1 hour at a time.
* Good visual and auditory acuity.
* Full use of hands and arms.
* Ability to speak clearly.
* Ability to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally.
* Offsite laboratory employees must pass color blindness testing.
