The incumbent must be a graduate of a 2-year associate degree or a 4-year Baccalaureate Degree National Board for Respiratory Care (NRBC) approved Respiratory Therapy Program. Responsibilities: * Mechanical ventilator initiation and management. * Insertion and/or care of artificial airways. * Patient assessment, medication administration and recommendation for therapy, interpretation of clinical data. * Airway clearance and bronchoscopy assist as appropriate. * Participation in the Rapid Response Team, Code Team, Trauma Team, and Sepsis Team as applicable by member. * Participate in multi-disciplinary rounds in critical care areas and participate in education of students/other staff. * Protect patients or staff members using safety equipment. * Maintains a safe environment complying with Northern Light Health policies and procedures; reports and directly addresses environmental hazards and violations of patient safety policy and/or protocol when involved or observed. * Other Duties. Summary: Respiratory Therapists assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. They collect and analyze sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine oxygenation and ventilation status. Respiratory therapist also measures lung volumes and capacities, deliver inhaled medication as prescribed and performs a verity of chest physiotherapies to aid in the treatment of pulmonary disease. Under the supervision of the department manager and medical director a Respiratory therapist I must have successfully completed either an associate's or bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy. All respiratory therapist I's must complete their board licensure testing as a CERTIFIED respiratory therapist and hold an active state license as a CERTIFIED respiratory technician and must obtain their REGISTERED respiratory therapy license within one year of hire. The RTI may provide care in all areas of the hospital, excluding NICU (at manager's discretion) but must be indirectly supervised by a registered respiratory therapist as per state law. Once licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist is obtained the RTI may be eligible for advancement to the RTII level. The Respiratory Therapist II will be a graduate from an accredited associate's or bachelor's program in respiratory therapy and must have passed their licensure exam at the REGISTERED respiratory therapist level. The RRTII may work independently in all areas of the facility apart from NICU unless deemed appropriate by the management team. RRTII's are eligible for advancement to the RRTIII level upon successfully completing the requirements identified in the RRTIII description. The RRTII must meet the following requirements prior to advancing to the RRTIII level. -Actively participates in the partnership council - Successful completion of NICU orientation - Two letters of recommendation (1 RT co-worker, 1 RN or Provider) Responsibilities: * Mechanical ventilator initiation and management. • Insertion and/or care of artificial airways • Patient assessment, medication administration and recommendation for therapy, interpretation of clinical data • Airway clearance & bronchoscopy assist, as appropriate. • Participation in the Rapid Response Team, Code Team, Trauma Team, and Sepsis team, as applicable by member • Participate in multi-disciplinary rounds in critical care areas and participate in education of students/other staff. • Protect patients or staff members using safety equipment. • Maintains a safe environment complying with NLH policies and procedures; reports and directly addresses environmental hazards and violations of patient safety policy and/or protocol when involved or observed. • May perform other duties upon request. Under the supervision of the department manager and medical director a Respiratory therapist I must have successfully completed either an associate's or bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy. All respiratory therapist I's must complete their board licensure testing as a CERTIFIED respiratory therapist and hold an active state license as a CERTIFIED respiratory technician and must obtain their REGISTERED respiratory therapy license within one year of hire. The RTI may provide care in all areas of the hospital, excluding NICU (at manager's discretion) but must be indirectly supervised by a registered respiratory therapist as per state law. Once licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist is obtained the RTI may be eligible for advancement to the RTII level. Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital Department: Respiratory Therapy Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital Work Type: PRN Hours Per Week: No Hours Assigned Work Schedule: Variable Under the supervision of the Cardiopulmonary Services Medical Director and Department Director, the Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing cardiopulmonary care services in accordance with specific physician's orders, diagnostic, therapeutic and clinical assessments, provides patient education according to department policies and procedures. Responsibilities: * Maintains knowledge of the various methods of oxygen delivery, including the necessary equipment. Remains alert assesses possible side effects to oxygen therapy. * Administers respiratory therapy treatments, understands the purpose of each and the possible side effects associated with each. * Sets up and monitors invasive and non-invasive ventilation support and the associated critical care duties required for such treatment, such as airway management and tracheal suctioning. * Able to assess patient pain interfering with optimal level of function or participation in rehabilitation -- makes appropriate physician contact for intervention. * Performs arterial punctures to obtain arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis and understands the possible complications and contraindications associated with the procedure. * Follows departmental equipment sterilization and inventory control procedures. * Documents all pertinent data on the patient's medical record following completion of any service. * Maintains a thorough knowledge of all departmental forms, flow charts, logbooks and their proper usage. * Performs all additional duties as assigned by the department director. * Performs EKGs, Holter monitor, event monitor, pulmonary function testing and cardiac stress testing processes and sends reports to appropriate locations and files reports in department according to department procedure. * Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the differences in techniques and treatment modalities as performed on patients of varying ages, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients, as well as the general patient population. * Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of oxygen concentrations and medication doses as they relate to patients of varying ages, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients. * Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. * Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure that it is functioning safely and efficiently. * Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs of a patients and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Patient's family is included in teaching, as appropriate. * Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients' needs are met and that hospital policy is followed. * Demonstrates ability to assess patient, his/her need, and ability to tolerate treatment and reassessment for response to treatment.
