GENERAL SUMMARY
Works under the supervision of the Manager of Sterile Processing. The CentralSterileTechnician's primary job function is to decontaminate, clean, disinfect, rinse, sterilize, and assemble patient care equipment, linens, and instruments according to established policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
1. Prepares trays and packs for sterilization according to established policies and procedures.
2. Inspects sterile supplies prior to distribution and handles supplies according to policy.
3. Documents all sterilizations completely by maintaining an itemized log for all instruments and trays sterilized, and a record of the biological results.
4. Demonstrates knowledge in the processes of gas plasma hydrogen peroxide (Sterrad) and Acetylsalicylic Acid (Reilance EPS) with complete documentation including biological monitoring.
5. Assembles all instrument procedure trays, packs, and specialty supply carts according to set standards.
6. Dispenses products requested for sterile and non-sterile equipment and supplies; Assigns priority to emergency request and issues required supplies and equipment based on knowledge of intended procedures according to established aseptic technique.
7. Performs other related duties as required such as examining sterilization/expiration dates, reporting inoperable equipment making a visual inventory inspection to maintain adequate levels of stock/supplies.
8. Documents all sterilization by maintaining an itemized log for all instruments and trays sterilized.
9. Responsible for the PAR leveling of surgical instrumentation for the Department of Surgical Services.
10. Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition to maintain required standards for handling sterilized and clean materials and to maintain a safe work environment.
11. Assists in the orientation of new employees to each work assigned area and total department operation.
12. Assembles case carts per policy and procedure.
13. Pre-cleans, decontaminates and transports contaminated instruments according to policy
14. Performs intermediate-level disinfection and/ or high level disinfection per the Instructions for Use (IFU) by the manufacture. This includes ensuring the scopes or probes used within the department are cleaned, disinfected, maintained and stored per the IFU's.

Demonstrate working knowledge of sterilization process and techniques involving both steam and chemical means. This includes appropriate documentation, storage, and transportation. Must have a thorough understanding of the sterilizer mechanical and chemical indicators, as well as the proper use and interpretation of the biological monitoring system.
Effectively enters, modifies, and searches for relevant information in the instrument tracking system. Demonstrates knowledge of surgical case preparation. Correctly identifies and retrieves pertinent instruments and supplies for scheduled cases or upon request.
Incorporates infection control guidelines while transferring, storing, and transporting sterile packages.
Interacts with external customers, such as vendors and surgical reps for the processing of loaner trays and receipt of CEU's
Follows and promotes industry standards and best practices, as supported by AAMI and AORN.
Demonstrate strong customer service skills while meeting requests of both the operating rooms and external clinics. Must be able the think critically and act quickly to meet the needs of all patients.
Responsible for aiding in the education and training of fellow associates.

* Manages and maintains a large budget of inventory to ensure the operating room and clinical services have all necessary instrumentation to complete procedures.
* Responsible for drafting annually, the fiscal year budget plan by interpreting historical data and predicting or estimating future requirements.
* Manages a SPS Equipment Inventory Listing (EIL) of over $1.4M for all patient care equipment and other equipment assigned to SPS.
* Plans, develops, directs, and maintains a Quality Control Program.
* Responsible for the successful deployment and monitoring of International Organization of Standards / ISO 9001 Quality Management System.

Qualifications:
* High school graduate or equivalent
* Certification in Operating Room Technology a plus
* Current BLS required
* MA Certification preferred
* Knowledge of policies and procedures specific to the OR and GI
* Strong Customer Service Skills
* Manual dexterity to handle instruments quickly
* Must be conscientious, organized and able to handle the stress of a busy operating room & GI lab environment
* Must be able to function as a team player
* Possess the ability to lift 25 pounds
* Must be able to communicate and understand the English language, both written and verbal
