Eastern Bank company history timeline
The first branch opened in Hurley, Miss., in 1976 and was shortly followed by the opening of a branch in Escatawpa, Miss.
In 1979, the Merchants and Farmers Bank expanded operations by opening a northside branch and constructed a drive-up motor bank behind its main office building.
While the main office facility has been renovated and expanded several times during the past century, the largest renovation project occurred in 1992.
With a humble beginning in 1992, EBL moved forward with a small yet confident stride and a pledge to impacting lives positively.
In 1993, the Bank’s name was changed to Century Bank and Trust to reflect the Bank’s evolving and growing role within the financial services industry.
Douglas T. Luce, Sr. succeeded and was elected Chairman of the Board, a position he held until his death in 1997.
At the onset of the new millennium, the Bank of Lucedale officially changed its name to Century Bank in January 1999.
A third Jackson County, Mississippi branch opened in Vancleave, Miss. in 1999.
Growth for the bank continued in neighboring Mobile County, Alabama in June 2002 with the acquisition of Mobile County Bank branches in Grand Bay and the Tillman’s Corner areas of Mobile.
July 17, 2003 Launched online banking services across all the branches.
Introduced in 2003, the tri-colour mnemonic of EBL signifies vibrant colors of the sun, the sky and the earth.
June 27, 2005 Authorized share capital increased to BDT 3.3 billion.
November 30, 2005 Partnered with IFC under Global Trade Finance Program (GTFP) for better handling complex trade transactions.
May 25, 2008 First 'Right Issue' declared @ 2:1 at par.
April 19, 2009 Registration of EBL 1st Mutual Fund with Securities and Exchange Commission.
April 4, 2010 Implemented 'Universal Banking System (UBS)', world's one of the renowned core banking solutions as a first bank in Bangladesh.
In February 2012, the Board of Directors named Peter vanLingen President and Chief Executive Officer of Century Bank.
July 19, 2012 Crowned Asia's Best Employer Brand Awards 2012 in the category of 'Best HR Strategy in line with business' by World HR Congress & Employer Branding Institute.
October 5, 2012 IFC awarded EBL the Best GTFP Issuing Bank in South Asia in 2012
March 22, 2013 EBL wins the Best Retail Bank in Bangladesh 2013 awarded by the Asian Banker.
March 19, 2015 EBL wins the prestigious Best Retail Bank for Bangladesh2015 award.
March 21, 2016 EBL is the first bank in Bangladesh to be awarded Ba3 ratings by Moody's
May 24, 2018 EBL received Asian Banker Transaction Awards-2018 in two categories: Best Cash Management Bank in Bangladesh and Best Trade Finance Bank in Bangladesh at China World Hotel in Beijing.
December 02, 2020: EBL has been awarded the prestigious Bank of the Year 2020 for Bangladesh by The Banker.
