Cerritos College company history timeline

1955

June 10, 1955 – Residents of Bellflower, Downey, Norwalk, La Mirada, Artesia, Bloomfield and Carmenita Elementary school districts vote to establish the Excelsior Junior College District, which would later become Cerritos College

September 17, 1955 - $6-million construction bond passes by a 4-1 vote

The college was founded in 1955.

1956

Originally, classrooms were rented in the now defunct Excelsior High School in September 1956.

Cerritos College was founded in 1956.

1957

On July 24, 1957, the Cerritos Junior College District won the case against Dairy Valley (now Cerritos) to use the undeveloped land as an educational site.

1958

March 25, 1958 – Field House is the first campus building completed

June 12, 1958 – First commencement ceremony.

October 1958 – $8-million construction bond to complete campus buildings

1959

On September 1959, the college moved from Excelsior High School to the current site.

1966

1966 – The Board of Trustees approves the purchase of the “South 40,” enlarging the campus to 135 acres

1979

1979 – The Cerritos College Foundation was established

1981

December 7, 1981 – 40 years after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Cerritos College dedicates the United StatesS. Pelias Bell from the United StatesS. Pelias that survived the attack.

1984

1984 – California community colleges introduce enrollment fees: $5 per unit, $50 for 12 units and $100 for annual, full-time students

1985

Institutionally administered financial aid is available to distance learners. It first offered distance learning courses in 1985.

1992

1992 – Library expansion enlarges the facility from 22,000 square feet to more than 40,000

1994

1994 – New library renamed the Wilford Michael Library and Learning Resource Center

1999

1999 – ASCC underwrites the development of Falcon Square (formally called “The Quad”)

2004

March 2, 2004 – Residents pass a $210-million Measure CC bond measure to modernize the campus

2006

May 17, 2006 – Science building opens as the college’s first completed bond project

2012

March 2, 2012 – Facilities and Purchasing Complex opens

November 6, 2012 – Residents approve a $350-million Measure G bond to continue campus renovations

2014

July 16, 2014 – Liberal Arts/DSP&S building opens

2015

September 17, 2015 – Cerritos College celebrates 60 years

October 7, 2015 – Newly renovated Culinary Arts facility opens

2020

The Class of 2020 celebrated 5,300 degrees and certificates awarded – the largest graduating class in campus history

2021

The following services will be interrupted from Friday, May 28, 2021 to Monday, May 31, 2021 for updates: PeopleSoft, MyCerritos, Rosters+, Schedule+, Counseling+, Orientation+, OnBase.
