Cerritos Library company history timeline

1955

June 10, 1955 – Residents of Bellflower, Downey, Norwalk, La Mirada, Artesia, Bloomfield and Carmenita Elementary school districts vote to establish the Excelsior Junior College District, which would later become Cerritos College

September 17, 1955 - $6-million construction bond passes by a 4-1 vote

1956

September 11, 1956 – First classes offered to 197 students in rented classrooms at Excelsior High School

From an agricultural community, incorporated as Dairy Valley in 1956, to the thriving commercial center residents know today as Cerritos.

1958

March 25, 1958 – Field House is the first campus building completed

June 12, 1958 – First commencement ceremony.

October 1958 – $8-million construction bond to complete campus buildings

1966

1966 – The Board of Trustees approves the purchase of the “South 40,” enlarging the campus to 135 acres

1978

In 1978, the city dedicated the nation's first solar heated City Hall complex.

1979

1979 – The Cerritos College Foundation was established

1980

Continuing on with the 1980's the City broke new ground with the development of the Cerritos Auto Square, which generates more that 6.8 million in sales tax revenue annually.

1984

1984 – California community colleges introduce enrollment fees: $5 per unit, $50 for 12 units and $100 for annual, full-time students

1990

The 1990's brought the creation of the world-class Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts and a state-of-the-art Sheriff's Station and Community Safety Center.

1994

1994 – New library renamed the Wilford Michael Library and Learning Resource Center

2002

The highly anticipated expansion of the Cerritos Library was dedicated to the community on March 16, 2002.

The world’s first Experience Library opened in 2002, drawing interest and visitors form communities worldwide.

2004

March 2, 2004 – Residents pass a $210-million Measure CC bond measure to modernize the campus

2012

March 2, 2012 – Facilities and Purchasing Complex opens

2014

July 16, 2014 – Liberal Arts/DSP&S building opens

2015

October 7, 2015 – Newly renovated Culinary Arts facility opens
