**Child Life Specialist - Family Support Services at Providence Alaska Medical Center**

Responsible for the coordination, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive therapeutic and educational programs with the emphasis on the Pediatric patients' and families' positive adjustment to hospitalization. Provides interventions to circumvent the negative psychological impact of hospitalization and illness.

Hours: Full Time, 1.0 FTE, Days, 40 Hours Per Week.

**In this position you will:**

+ Obtain information from medical records, allied health professionals and patient/family upon admission to service to identify psychosocial and educational needs as related to the hospital stay and the child's ability to adapt to and cope with the medical environment and the medical interventions provided. Promotes patient and family adaptability and competency in coping with the stressors of the medical environment through education, emotional support, and play/activity as deemed appropriate to their developmental/cognitive level and medical condition.

+ Collaborate with family, patient and allied health care professionals to determine a plan of care based on identified needs.

+ Identify, recommend and assist with the facilitation of specific pediatric policies and programs interdepartmentally to ensure a continuity of psychosocial needs throughout the organization regarding pediatric/family centered care.

+ Assume responsibility for obtaining current accurate information and expanding knowledge base through utilization of continuing education and other appropriate learning experiences.

+ Include timely documentation of interventions and planning in medical record. Establish working relationship with patient/family and provides liaison with other colleagues. Participate in care conferences and multi-disciplinary rounds.

+ Assist with the collection of data and the monitoring of patient care quality improvement standards.

+ Maintain and develop clinical skills to include child development relating to hospital stressors, patient education, coping skills and strategies and basic counseling interventions.

+ Provide in-services and lectures to health care professionals, school classrooms and/or community organizations as requested.

+ Promote, lead and/or assist in community health fair activities/programs that promote children's health care and education.

+ Provide assistance to the volunteer department in orientation and coordinate activities of volunteers on the pediatric unit or involved in related activities. Oversee activities provided by volunteers and evaluates for development appropriateness and safety.

+ Supervise site trainees from community assistance programs as assigned.

+ Be responsible for the development and maintenance of developmentally appropriate patient teaching tools for use with pediatric patients, families and public presentation.

+ Be responsible for the development of the Child Life Program as it relates to the needs (inherent and expressed) of patients and families of the Children's Hospital; of other Medical Center departments that serve the pediatric population; and of the greater community needs as developed through the Child Life Council.

+ Be responsible for the purchase of playroom toys, art supplies and recreational equipment on the pediatric unit.

**Required qualifications for this position include:**

+ Certified by the Child Life Commission
